Shocking drop in the last 15 minutes, experts explain the widespread profit-taking wave

The widespread profit-taking wave in sessions 5-9 and 8-9 was even more evident, appearing in most industry groups such as banking, real estate, securities, retail... with increasing selling pressure.

The stock market opened the first session of the week in the red. Bottom-fishing demand in some banking stocks along with a relative recovery in the steel and securities groups helped the index to narrow the decline in the first half of the session.

However, selling pressure continued to dominate and spread to many other industry groups in the last 15 minutes, causing the VN-Index to fall sharply and close at the lowest level of the day, losing 42.44 points compared to the reference.

Stock market decline from technical perspective

Total market liquidity today increased by more than 43% compared to the previous session, reflecting that supply pressure at high scores is still very large.

A rare bright spot comes from foreign investors' activities: foreign investors reversed their net buying in the afternoon session with a total value of 1,715.54 billion VND, focusing mainly on stocks HPG, SSI and STB...

Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Dang Le - a technical analyst at Vietcap Securities - said that the frequency of widespread declines began to increase from August 20.

Following the correction sessions are recoveries with weak upward momentum and declining liquidity, showing that the market is starting to weaken short-term demand due to cautious sentiment around high prices.

The decline last weekend was accompanied by strong selling pressure across all sectors (except healthcare stocks) and capitalization segments, causing the short-term bullish structure of the VN-Index to deteriorate technically. This was also a factor that triggered the sell-off sentiment, reinforced the correction inertia and led to downward pressure in sessions 8-9.

According to Mr. Dang, in July 2025, foreign investors net bought over 60% of trading sessions. In August, the trend reversed when net selling pressure increased over 90% of sessions, this situation continued to repeat in 3/4 of the first sessions of September.

This person further analyzed: the adjustment sessions from August 22 to 25 all showed the common point that the downward pressure spread across all capitalization segments.

Meanwhile, the following recovery sessions were differentiated, as demand mainly focused on a few large-cap stocks to maintain the index's momentum, instead of being spread out like the previous increase.

The widespread profit-taking wave in sessions 5-9 and 8-9 was even more evident, appearing in most industry groups such as banking, real estate, securities, retail... with increasing selling pressure.

Today alone, all banking stocks have made strong corrections, with an amplitude of over 2.5%. Large capitalization sectors such as real estate, securities, retail, information technology, and oil and gas have also recorded similar developments.

The current correction is technical in nature, mainly due to profit taking.

According to Mr. Quach An Khanh - analyst of Vietcombank Securities (VCBS) - VN-Index ended today's session with a solid red candle, with liquidity at the 20-session average level, showing that supply still overwhelms bottom-fishing demand.

Regarding trading strategy, the VCBS expert said that VN-Index recorded the second consecutive sharp decline after the previous hot increase. With the current situation, investors can temporarily reduce the leverage ratio to maintain purchasing power, waiting for the opportunity to disburse when the price level is more stable.

At the same time, it is necessary to closely monitor market developments to restructure the portfolio: realize profits in stocks that have increased rapidly, take advantage of the recovery during the session, and observe stocks that maintain the support zone to disburse exploratory investments.

Mr. Dang Le said that, technically, VN-Index still maintains a medium-term uptrend, supported by fundamental factors such as economic growth and expectations of market upgrade.

"We assess the current correction as technical, mainly due to short-term profit-taking, while contributing to strengthening the medium-term uptrend," Vietcap experts affirmed.
