Last week, Hanoi recorded 102 more measles cases in 22 districts. It is forecasted that the number of measles cases may continue to increase in the first three months of 2025 due to the interaction and contact during the Lunar New Year holiday.

Specifically, according to information from the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC Hanoi), between January 10 and 17, there were 102 confirmed cases of measles, a decrease of 18 cases compared to the previous week.

It is forecasted that the measles epidemic will continue to develop complicatedly during the Lunar New Year holiday, similar to the measles epidemic in 2018-2019.

Cumulatively from the beginning of 2024 to now, the city has recorded a total of 566 measles cases in all 30 districts, towns and cities. In 2025 alone, there have been 102 measles cases so far, mainly appearing in 22 districts, towns and cities, while there were no cases in the same period last year.

Analysis of measles cases by age group shows that there are cases in many age groups, from children under 6 months (10.8%), to children from 6 months to 10 years old (43.1%) and adults (28.4%). Some measles outbreaks have appeared in schools in wards such as Chuong Duong (Hoan Kiem district), Hoang Liet and Mai Dong (Hoang Mai district).

According to the Hanoi CDC, the number of measles cases last week tended to decrease compared to the previous week but remained high, mainly in those who were not fully vaccinated or had not received the measles vaccine.

It is forecasted that the measles epidemic will continue to develop complicatedly during the Lunar New Year holiday, similar to the measles epidemic in 2018-2019.

Regarding the measles epidemic, Associate Professor, Dr. Do Duy Cuong, Director of the Center for Tropical Diseases, said measles can cause many serious complications such as encephalitis, pneumonia, otitis media, and other infections, especially in adults and pregnant women.

The Ministry of Health recommends measles vaccination as the most effective preventive measure. Measles vaccines, especially the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine, help prevent the disease and its dangerous complications.

The Ministry of Health is also directing localities to strengthen monitoring and provide additional measles vaccinations for children aged 1-5 years and people in close contact with infected cases.

Dr. Nguyen Tuan Hai, Safpo/Potec Vaccination System, said that vaccination is the only way to protect children and adults from this potentially dangerous disease. Countries around the world are required to achieve and maintain a coverage rate of over 95% with 2 doses of measles vaccine.

Children and adults need to proactively get fully and timely vaccinated against measles to help the body produce specific antibodies against the measles virus, helping to prevent the risk of measles and severe complications, with outstanding effectiveness of up to 98%.

In addition, each person needs to proactively clean their eyes, nose, and throat with antiseptic solution every day, limit gatherings in crowded places, avoid close contact with people showing signs of measles or suspected of having the disease, and do not share personal items with people with the disease. Keep your living space clean and supplement foods to help strengthen your immune system.

If you experience symptoms of measles (fever, runny nose, dry cough, red eyes, sensitivity to light, rash all over the body), you should quickly go to the nearest medical center or facility for timely examination and treatment.

The increase in measles cases is becoming a major concern, especially for children who have not been fully vaccinated.
