Last week, Coach Mourinho officially debuted as head coach of Benfica with a two-year contract, marking his return to the club where he began his coaching career in 2000. Before that, "The Special One" was fired by Fenerbahce after the Turkish team failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Many sources in Portugal believe that coach Mourinho could earn nearly 30 million pounds in two years leading Benfica, including 14 million pounds in the first season and about 15.7 million pounds in the next season. However, the coach born in 1963 has flatly denied this figure and said that he even "lost" when accepting to return to work in his homeland.
“If I stayed at home for the rest of the season, I would earn more than I do at Benfica. It’s that simple. I could be in London with my family, on holiday in the Algarve, travelling here and there and still earn more,” he said.
I don't do this job for the money. I accept the sacrifice because I miss the feeling of competing for titles. This is something I couldn't have at AS Roma or Fenerbahce. For me, Benfica is a special opportunity both professionally and personally."
In his return to Benfica, Coach Mourinho won 4 points after the first 2 matches in the Portuguese national championship. This is the 10th club in his illustrious coaching career. In his career, he has won most of the noble titles such as Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference League, Premier League, Serie A, La Liga...

When asked why he continues to work despite not reaping financial benefits, coach Mourinho emphasized: “What motivates me is the challenge, the risk, the feeling of winning or losing, which can be great today but can also be bad tomorrow. That is what takes me out of my comfort zone. If a lie is repeated, people will believe it is the truth. But in reality, if I stay at home until July, I will earn more than at Benfica.”
However, Mourinho's future at Benfica is still uncertain. According to Record, his contract has a clause that allows both parties to unilaterally terminate it within the first 10 days after the end of the season. At that time, the compensation cost for dismissal or if Mourinho voluntarily leaves will be significantly lower than at other times.
According to some close sources, coach Mourinho only receives a salary of less than 6 million euros/year when working in Lisbon. This is the lowest salary that the Portuguese strategist has received in many years.
