Iran proposes BRICS security structure, pledges cooperation with Venezuela against US intervention

Iran's Tasnim news agency reported on September 12 that Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, proposed establishing a security structure within the BRICS group of countries.

Speaking to senior security officials and national security advisers of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and BRICS+, at a meeting held in St. Petersburg (Russia), Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ahmadian emphasized: "My specific proposal is to create a security structure specifically for BRICS.

This security architecture is to be able to deal with common threats, such as terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, illicit biological activities, human trafficking and misuse of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and satellite systems, as well as create common mechanisms to ensure maritime security and address cyber threats."

Iran's IRNA news agency reported that during his visit to Russia, the Iranian security official met with his Russian counterparts Sergey Shoigu and other senior security officials from BRICS member states.

Meanwhile, according to Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency on September 11, Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh and Venezuelan Transport Minister Ramon Velasquez stressed the need to expand bilateral cooperation to counter US interference.

In a phone call, the two ministers, who are also the Chairmen of the Iran-Venezuela Economic Cooperation Committee, also called for expanding bilateral economic relations.

Mr. Nasirzadeh said the “resolute support” of the Venezuelan people for their Government and the “effective and decisive” presence of the Venezuelan Armed Forces in preventing Western plots, especially after the presidential election held in this Latin American country at the end of July.

He highlighted Iran's experience in resisting US interference and noted that the Tehran government is ready to share this experience with Venezuela, just like before.

For his part, the Venezuelan minister highlighted his readiness to fight the “common enemy”. Venezuela and Iran have established close economic and energy ties in recent years, to offset the impact of sanctions imposed by the US and the West.
