Two Southern medical monuments were inaugurated and placed on the campus of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy on the occasion of the 42nd anniversary of Vietnamese Teachers' Day.
On the occasion of the 42nd anniversary of Vietnamese Teachers' Day (November 20, 1982 - November 20, 2024), on the morning of November 18, 2024, the inauguration ceremony of the statues of two Southern medical monuments, the late Professor and Doctor Pham Bieu Tam and the late Professor and Doctor Truong Cong Trung, was held on the campus of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City.
The two statues are cast from pure bronze, 65cm high, weighing 40kg each, and are placed respectfully on a 1.45m high granite pedestal.
Statue of Professor - Doctor Pham Bieu Tam
Professor - Doctor Pham Bieu Tam (1913-1999), whose ancestors were from Ben Luc, Long An , was born in Nam Trung village, Phu Vang, Thua Thien - Hue, in a family of scholars and mandarins. He attended primary school at Dong Ba School (Hue), secondary school in Vinh and Buoi School, Hanoi.
In 1932, he studied medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Indochina University. In 1948, he and Dr. Tran Quang De were the first two Vietnamese medical masters to graduate in Paris (France). Returning to Vietnam, he taught at Hanoi Medical University and was also Director of Phu Doan (Yersin) Hospital from 1949 to 1954. In 1954, the professor and his family migrated to the South and were nominated as Director and Head of the Department of Surgery at Binh Dan Hospital.
On May 11, 1955, the Franco-Vietnamese University was returned to Vietnam by the French, and the professor was nominated as dean and became the first dean of the Saigon University of Medicine and Pharmacy. The professor devoted much effort to integrating the two French and American medical education systems to build a medical university with a national tradition, an enthusiastic and capable faculty, and a student body that was selected fairly and strictly. Although he only held the position of dean for 12 years (1955-1967), the professor's mark and influence on generations of students were profound and long-lasting, including those who had not studied with or did not know him.
Statue of Professor Truong Cong Trung
Professor, Doctor, People's Teacher, Hero of Labor Truong Cong Trung (1919-2006), native of Cho Gao, Tien Giang province, was a famous scientist, held many important positions and made many contributions to medical work in the South. From 1977 to November 1994, he was the Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Head of the Faculty of Medicine, Head of the Department of General Surgery, and a beloved teacher of many generations of surgeons after 1975.

With their contributions to the Vietnamese medical industry and the Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy in particular, the placement of the statues of the two professors demonstrates the national moral spirit of "Respecting teachers and valuing education", as a tribute to the contributions of the two professors, and at the same time reminds the next generations of the noble qualities of a physician "A good doctor is like a mother".
