Sudan's capital Khartoum has fallen silent after a 24-hour ceasefire began. Hamed Ibrahim, a resident of eastern Khartoum, said it was "the first time since the conflict began that hours have passed without us hearing gunfire. Today is completely different".

At a market in Khartoum, people rushed to buy fruit and other basic goods.

“The ceasefire is an opportunity for us to get some food supplies after we have been living on limited quantities in recent days,” said Mohamad Radwan, one of the shoppers.

Meanwhile, bus worker Ali Issa said many people were taking advantage of this time to leave the capital before the latest ceasefire expires at 6 a.m. on June 11, local time (1 p.m. the same day, Vietnam time).

In West Darfur, one of the areas where conflict broke out, there has been no information about compliance with the ceasefire.

Fighting has been raging in Sudan since mid-April, when army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo – the RSF commander – turned against each other.

Since then, several ceasefires have been agreed, only to be quickly broken. The US imposed sanctions on both men after the latest ceasefire collapsed late last month.

According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, a non-profit organization, about 1,800 people have been killed since the outbreak of fighting. Meanwhile, the United Nations said nearly 2 million people have been displaced, of whom 476,000 have sought refuge in neighboring countries.

The fighting has rapidly depleted stocks of food, money and other essentials. Looting has broken out at banks, embassies, aid agencies and even churches.

Aid organizations say they are unable to provide assistance in Khartoum due to a lack of security and safe movement of staff.
