Proposing the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to include Phu Quy Port in the designated fishing port

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Thuan has just proposed to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Department of Fisheries to consider and approve Phu Quy Port to be included in the list of designated fishing ports for fishing vessels operating from offshore areas to dock to unload products.

Binh Thuan has Phu Quy island district, located more than 100 km from the mainland, which is a key fishing area of the province with over 1,600 fishing vessels in operation, of which over 570 fishing vessels with a length of 15 m or more regularly operate in the open sea, combining production with protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands.

Ships are anchored in Phu Quy waters.

However, the island district currently does not have a fishing port announced according to the 2017 Fisheries Law. Therefore, fishing vessels operating on Phu Quy Island face difficulties in implementing the regulation "Fishing vessels with a length of 6 m or more must enter the port to unload products". In particular, fishing vessels with a length of 15 m or more must comply with the regulation "The captain only allows fishing vessels to dock at ports listed in the list of designated fishing ports announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for fishing vessels operating from offshore areas and outwards", while the nearest designated port for offshore fishing vessels to dock is Phan Thiet Fishing Port, located over 100 km from the island. Currently, on the island, there is Phu Quy Port managed by the Department of Transport, which is a transport port for vessels with a capacity of up to 1,000 DWT. At the same time, fishing vessels of fishermen in Phu Quy district regularly dock at the port to unload products and receive fuel for their fishing trips to exploit and purchase seafood at sea.

Phu Quy is a key fishing area of the province with over 1,600 fishing boats in operation.

To solve the above difficulties and shortcomings (especially the regulation that fishing vessels operating in the offshore area must dock at designated fishing ports), the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Thuan has proposed to make Phu Quy Port a designated port for fishing vessels operating from the offshore area to dock, contributing to more effective implementation of anti-IUU fishing work. It is known that currently, the project of Storm Shelter for Fishing Vessels on Phu Quy Island (regional level) is investing in phase 2 (2021 - 2025) from central capital managed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

In August 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang signed a decision approving the Project to build Phu Quy Island into a center for exploitation and logistics services for fisheries, combined with search and rescue at sea. The goal is to build Phu Quy Island into a center for exploitation and logistics services for fisheries, combined with search and rescue at sea in the region and the whole country; focusing on the reasonable development of the scale of each field, focusing on offshore seafood exploitation, preservation, preliminary processing of products and fisheries logistics services...
