What can students do to avoid abusing artificial intelligence?

Quick tools and resources

As a Psychology major, Dang Khoa, a student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, often uses AI to search for documents, especially foreign specialized documents, and requests translation into Vietnamese or vice versa.

Khoa said that this tool shortens the time spent searching for documents and gives him more time to focus on other tasks. "I see many advantages when using GPT chat in my studies, it helps me find information faster and if I know how to guide the questions given to me, it will also meet my needs a lot," Dang Khoa added.

Van Tung, a second-year student at a college in Ho Chi Minh City, said he often uses AI because most software today integrates it. Tung often asks AI to process sound, images, and graphics very quickly and without taking too much time.

"For example, in design, I use artificial intelligence to separate the background of a character very quickly instead of having to sit and draw each point to separate the background. I find it very convenient to use artificial intelligence," Tung added.

However, these students said that because they had been warned, they often searched for information and verified the content provided by AI to get the most accurate information.

Need the guidance of a teacher

The benefits of artificial intelligence for today's learning cannot be denied. However, if students abuse it too much, it will lead to many serious consequences. Evidence is that recently a student used AI to do his homework and was given a score of 0 at a college in Ho Chi Minh City, causing a noisy controversy.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Truong Thinh, Director of the Institute of Intelligent and Interactive Technology at the University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City, AI tools have a positive impact on students' creative thinking, creating opportunities for students to explore new knowledge and skills.

However, it also has a negative side of reducing creativity and being too dependent on that tool. Students will feel that without that tool they cannot solve the problem.

In addition, the results that AI gives are not necessarily completely correct because they are based on the database, if the database is wrong then the answer is also wrong.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Truong Thinh said: "Teachers must have enough knowledge and capacity to monitor and check that problem. If teachers do not have enough knowledge and ability to recognize that problem, it will be very difficult to solve it with AI or humans."

Dr. Le Manh Hai, Head of the Faculty of Information Technology, Gia Dinh University, said that currently, in addition to software to prevent the abuse of artificial intelligence in learning, the Faculty is also applying measures to educate students. Next, the Faculty aims to change the way of teaching.

"Teachers must create questions that require students to argue for right or wrong, which AI cannot do. Or problems without solutions that require students to think, or problems that require logical thinking, computers cannot do because AI only answers right or wrong," Dr. Le Manh Hai added.

Nowadays, using AI is not bad. If you know how to take advantage of AI, turning it into a support tool will save a lot of time to invest in creativity. However, if you depend too much on it, students can lose many abilities such as critical thinking and creativity. Therefore, it also requires lecturers to have enough capacity to recognize which problems are solved by AI and which are solved by humans.
