Falling into the 'matrix' of lecturer recruitment fraud

Preliminary must participate in survey and deposit, receive money

Ms. NTH (HCMC) has just graduated with a master's degree from Japan and returned to Vietnam. She wants to become a university lecturer, so she is looking for recruitment information from universities.

On October 30, Ms. H. happened to see a recruitment announcement posted on the Facebook page of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, so she submitted her application through this page.

Here, there was a person claiming to be Nguyen Thu Thao, in charge of human resources at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (phone number 0934388205), talking to Ms. H. about receiving the application. This person announced that the preliminary selection schedule would take place at 8:00 a.m. on October 1, expected to last 60-90 minutes, the main content was to take an essay test, learn more about the new project that the school is cooperating and developing.

"Through this, the unit can evaluate each candidate's ability to handle situations, focus on work, and sense of community responsibility," the notice stated.

At the same time, a person named Thao asked Ms. H. to download an app called Singal to participate in the online preliminary round. Thinking that this was the school's recruitment app, Ms. S. downloaded it and on the morning of October 1 joined the chat group on the app.

During the preliminary screening, a person introduced as Nguyen Anh Tu, an administrative and human resources staff, will "accompany and guide each exchange", and at the same time listen and learn more about the capacity, spirit and enthusiasm for work of each candidate. This person sends information about the preliminary screening process and requests confirmation of the information.

At this time, Ms. H. saw many other nicks that seemed to be the same candidate texting "confirmed". The preliminary selection began with the candidate taking a 15-minute survey at the school's survey link. Ms. H. saw many people texting "completed" so she also participated in the survey.

Part 2, the person named Tu requested to conduct a cultural study and register to support the development department of the Social Security Fund project to support the community with a link that, when clicked, has the school logo. The school will support money if the survey is completed. The candidates continued to confirm that they had completed the survey and agreed to participate in the project.

A "candidate" named Thien sent a message in the group: "I asked my friend who is working at the school and he said that after completing this round, the points will be added to the application and then the interview will be held." Everyone continued to ask each other if they would like to deposit money to participate in the project, and they all agreed to deposit money.

Then, a person named Nhung sent a screen showing that she had just received a benefit of 296,000 VND from the project "after placing 3 data orders". A person named Thien also sent a picture of his account having just received 29,300,000 VND from the project after "choosing level 2, but had to transfer 60% of the profit to the school and only received 40% for himself". According to this person, level 2 means that this person deposited 6,800,000 VND into the project to receive more than 29 million VND.

"After supporting the welfare application, I realized that the higher the level, the more profit I get. Do it and send me the profit you get," said the person named Thien. Immediately after, the person named Nhung took a photo of the account number that had just received 56,380,000 VND and announced, "Your group has finished working and received the money, everyone is so happy."

Observing the group chat, Ms. H. concluded that this "preliminary audition" was too unstable and showed signs of fraud, so she left the group on Signal.

Fake, not related to the school

Ms. H. recounted: "When I participated in the project development support survey, they initially transferred me 120,000 VND. After doing the operation on the website, the total amount they transferred to my account was 736,000 VND. They explained that this was a "welfare fund" and I would receive 40%, and the school would receive 60%. But then they said that if I wanted to receive larger amounts, I had to deposit money to them, but I stopped."

According to Ms. H., the sophisticated trick here is to create a group on a chat app like real candidates, exchange and call on each other to do it together to create trust for Ms. H. "If I continue, I might be manipulated, led and pay large sums of money to them," Ms. H. commented.

Speaking to Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter, Master Nguyen Thi Xuan Dung, Director of the Media Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, said: "The school has just received this information. Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) confirms that the recruitment information being spread on fan pages, emails or impersonating groups is fake and has nothing to do with the school."

According to Master Xuan Dung, the school only announces recruitment through official channels including the website hutech.edu.vn , fanpage HUTECH - Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. All interview information and official recruitment application reception are only conducted at the school's main office.

"The school recommends that candidates be vigilant, absolutely do not provide personal data or transfer money to unauthenticated sources; at the same time, contact the school directly for verification via the school's phone number or email.
