The country also surpassed the US for the first time in contributions to Earth science and the environment.

The data is taken from the Nature Index – which tracks scientific articles published in 82 journals across different fields within the natural sciences, specifically chemistry, Earth and environmental sciences, life sciences and physical sciences.

The scientific journals included in the study are all world-leading publications such as Cell , Nature , Science...

The full 2022 data is expected to be released next June.

China's contributions to global science have increased significantly since the index was launched in 2014, according to Nature magazine. Beijing has also been leading the world in physical and chemical sciences since 2021.

Data provided by the world's largest scientific publisher Elsevier also shows that China and the US are the largest bilateral research partners globally. From 2017-2017, each country contributed about 20% of the world's scientific research.

Also according to Elsevier, China has for the first time surpassed the US to lead the world in the number of most cited articles - an important indicator measuring each country's scientific influence.

The Japan Science and Technology Indicators report said that from 2018-2020, China contributed 27.2% of the world's most cited articles while the US contributed 24.9%.

According to the journal S cience , China also took the lead over the US in 2016 in the number of scientific papers published.

It can be said that recently, China has been striving to become a global power in science and technology.

In February 2023, President Xi Jinping said strong basic research would be the driving force to achieve the above goal, and diversified funding sources, expanded international cooperation and training were important factors to help the world's second-largest economy become increasingly technologically independent.

China is also the world's second-largest spender on scientific research, with research and development (R&D) funding set to exceed 3 trillion yuan ($426.6 billion) by 2022, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
