4 million VND per kg of dried sea worms still in high demand Quang Ninh : Mui Ngoc fishing port is busy at the end of the year fishing season

In Vietnam, sea worms, also known as sea worms, sand worms, earth worms... have a shape quite similar to earthworms, but since ancient times, this type of seafood has been considered one of the rare species.

There are two types of sea worms: fresh sea worms and dried sea worms. While fresh sea worms are soft, chewy and crispy, they are often processed into delicious dishes such as stir-fried kohlrabi, soup, porridge, etc., dried sea worms are attractive because of their crunchiness and can be preserved and used for a long time.

Nowadays, sea worms are sold at quite expensive prices. A kilo of fresh sea worms costs up to 300-650 thousand VND. Dried sea worms are currently priced at 4-7 million VND/kg, depending on the type. On average, about 10-12 kg of fresh sea worms can produce 1 kg of dried sea worms. Fresh sea worms after being harvested must be washed clean of sand, blanched in boiling water and then dried on a charcoal stove to dry quickly while still ensuring aesthetics.

Sandworms appear in coastal areas such as Van Don, Mong Cai, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, Kien Giang ... However, sandworms in Quan Lan coastal area are still the most delicious.

Sandworm is a precious seafood, good for human health. This is a famous seafood of Van Don sea - Quang Ninh. In particular, sandworm is used as food for Southeast Asian cuisine and Asian cuisine in general.

Sandworm is a type of mollusk, boneless, similar to earthworm, reddish brown in color. On the body there are small horizontal stripes, no internal organs, only a part of the intestine connecting from head to tail, inside there is only sand, the average length is generally from 5cm to 10cm. In addition, some can be from 10cm to 40cm long. This is also considered a precious medicine in Oriental medicine with the effect of cooling the body, improving health. The time to catch the most worms is from January to May according to the solar calendar.

Sandworms only live on sandy beaches where the tides rise and fall. They often hide in sand crevices and caves in coastal areas, sometimes at the bottom of the sea at depths of up to 30m.

The shape of this seafood is similar to an earthworm, reddish brown in color. On the body of the sea worm there are tiny veins along the length like veins but larger in size, brighter in color. Its intestine is a tube that runs from head to toe and contains sand.

A fresh sea worm is 7-15cm long, with a thick body. When dried, the sea worm is only about 6-10cm long.

Sandworms have many benefits for human health. The specialty is considered as expensive as gold, containing many amino acids, alanine, succinic acid... and many minerals. To buy delicious sandworm products, you need to pay attention to the following points:

When buying fresh sea worms

To buy the freshest delicacies, choose the ones that are big and thick. Choose ones that are free of sand and have a distinctive ocean smell.

The hastily purchased sea worms are of poor quality and should be selected carefully. Because although sea worms have similar appearance in taste and nutrition, they cannot be the best quality.

When buying dried sea worms

Dried sea worms are often bought by tourists as gifts for relatives and friends. When buying this dried specialty, you should not choose the type that has changed color, because it may have been stored for a long time or is moldy, which is harmful to your health when eaten. You should choose the type of dried specialty that is thick and uniform. This type of seafood has a characteristic aroma, is not fishy, and is ivory white.

It is inevitable that the purchased sea worms will still have sand stuck inside. So you need to cut off both ends of the sea worms and fry them briefly without adding any cooking oil, then gently rub them with your hands to remove all the sand and add more cooking oil and stir. When the sea worms turn light yellow, they are done.
