Báo Gia đình và Xã hộiBáo Gia đình và Xã hội22/02/2025

GĐXH - People's Physician (TTND), physician Tran Van Quang is a giant of Vietnamese Oriental Medicine. Although he is 92 years old, he is still diligently writing articles, dedicating his life to systematizing folk remedies to pass on to future generations.

Devoted his life to systematizing folk remedies

Physician Tran Van Quang was born in Ha Nam , in a family with a tradition of practicing Oriental medicine, so his father taught him Chinese characters and passed on the profession from a very young age. During his passionate youth, he participated in the resistance war against the French, self-studied Han Nom, and further researched medicine.

Physician Tran Van Quang has spent a lot of time systematizing folk remedies. He confided: "I always worry that if we do not carefully record and systematize them, the precious knowledge of our ancestors will gradually disappear in the face of the strong development of modern medicine. Therefore, my colleagues and I translated the 43-volume "Y Ton Kim Giam" from Chinese. At the same time, we compiled and published 15 specialized books on Oriental medicine. I also focus on collecting and circulating remedies using indigenous medicinal herbs in the spirit of "Nam Duoc Tri Nam Nhan" of the great physician Tue Tinh."

Physician Tran Van Quang always puts the heart first and has many good remedies. Recently, there was a female patient with stage 3 kidney failure - a health warning stage, with hyperkalemia and heart rhythm disturbances... The patient had undergone very expensive treatment but could still be in danger of death. Physician Quang determined that stage 3 kidney failure is a relatively severe level but kidney function can still be maintained and slowly recovered. So, he prescribed 3 doses of herbal medicine for the patient, instructing the patient to closely monitor and combine with modern medicine. After only 3 months, the patient happily reported that her health had improved very well and believed in the precious remedy.

In another case, a patient with terminal cancer came to the clinic in a serious condition, his body was too weak. Instead of prescribing more medicine like some people do, Doctor Quang advised the patient to focus on eating nutritious food, maintaining a calm mind... The doctor's words made the patient very touched by his kindness, putting the patient's interests first.

A day of Traditional Medicine Practitioner Tran Van Quang is examining patients and prescribing medicine during the day and translating books at night.

In addition, physician Tran Van Quang often examines the poor for free and gives medicine to people in remote areas. Besides, many people know him as a very unique "reverse book copying physician". The original Chinese books of Oriental medicine were carefully copied by him into large letters. Then, the Vietnamese transcription was added - creating a bilingual book with the Chinese part written in large letters. He said that this must be done to preserve precious medical knowledge, lest one day the precious medicine recipes follow physicians who know ancient Chinese to... the other world .

So, every day, he took the pulse, prescribed, and dispensed medicine for patients. At night, he diligently copied books into large letters. When encountering difficult words, he had to look up the dictionary and study for a long time to make them suitable for the context of use. Therefore, it took him 3 years to copy and translate some books. There are 4 very special books on Oriental medicine: Tam Tu Kinh Medicine, Tan Ho Mach Hoc, Duoc Tinh Ca Quat Tu Bach Vi and Thang Dau Ca Quyet which are considered "bedside books" for Oriental medicine practitioners.

92 years old, physician Tran Van Quang is famous for many good remedies.

The combination of Eastern and Western medicine today

According to physician Tran Van Quang, there is a fundamental difference between Eastern and Western medicine:

- The theoretical system of Western medicine is built on the basis of Physiology - a major in the field of Science .

- The theoretical system of Oriental medicine is built on the foundation of Taoism (meaning the basis of the philosophies about the universe and human life of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and many other philosophies in ancient times).

Eastern and Western medicine have differences in principles but are not contradictory. Western medicine is based on physiology and scientific evidence, while Eastern medicine is based on human philosophy and natural laws. He is happy that there are many students who have opened Eastern medicine clinics that combine modern massage and acupuncture - a way to preserve the spirit of traditional medicine very well; at the same time, skillfully combine Eastern medicine with modern science. Knowing how to combine traditional medicine with Western medicine is the way to help Vietnamese Eastern medicine develop more and more.

The name and career of physician Tran Van Quang are symbols of the harmonious combination of Eastern and Western medicine. He added: "I once participated in building the Central Association's Diagnostic and Treatment Room - where both Eastern and Western medicine are applied in parallel. Eastern medicine is used to treat the root of the disease. Western medicine plays an important role in emergency and diagnosis." For him, Eastern medicine is a method of treatment that helps people harmonize with nature. However, the key is to preserve the unique identity of Vietnamese Eastern medicine.
