The Technical - Technology Department of Hai Duong Newspaper and Radio - Television Station currently has 3 servers storing documents and press products with a total capacity of up to 323.2 TB. Previously, when technology was not yet developed, the storage of radio and television products was done on tapes. From 2009 to now, this has been done on the information technology infrastructure.

Every day, the Provincial Newspaper and Radio - Television Station maintain 18-hour television broadcasting, 8-hour radio broadcasting with dozens of programs from news, reports, bulletins, arts and entertainment columns, talk shows, movies... All programs after completion and broadcast are selected and stored on the system.

"For each program, we create archive folders by day, month, year, specifically for each morning, noon, afternoon, evening, and end of day broadcast... The number of archive folders over the past decades is huge," said Mr. Nguyen Duc Dung, information technician.

In addition to raw data and broadcast programs, the above server system also stores many valuable film footage exploited or produced about history, about President Ho Chi Minh and Party and State leaders associated with the Eastern land or major political events of the country and province such as Party Congresses...

Hard drives storing radio and television materials

In case the server system has problems, the Technical - Technology Department of Hai Duong Newspaper and Radio - Television Station also stores important documents and programs through external hard drives with a capacity of 2 - 10 TB/drive. Many editors, reporters, and technicians also select and store important documents and products on their personal computers and external hard drives.

In the field of printed newspapers, Hai Duong Newspaper and Radio - Television Station currently has 532 volumes storing all the publications of Hai Duong Newspaper that have been published from Hai Duong News (1957 - 1961), Hai Duong Moi Newspaper (1961 - 1968), Hai Hung Newspaper (1968 - 1996), Hai Duong Newspaper (from 1997 to present). All are bound and carefully stored quarterly and monthly. After decades of existence, many issues and articles have been stained by time but still basically retain the original size, clear text, and are not blurred.

The printed publications of Hai Duong Newspaper from its early days until now are still carefully preserved.

In 2009, Hai Duong electronic information site (now Hai Duong electronic newspaper) was born. Over the past 16 years, press works posted on this platform have been stored on the server system.

Printed publications of Hai Duong Newspaper are now also integrated into Hai Duong electronic newspaper (PDF version), both meeting readers' needs and serving as a channel for storing information.

Old Hai Duong printed newspapers are expected to be digitized and stored in PDF format.

Journalist Nguyen Van Nghiep, technician of the Electronic Newspaper and Digital Content Department, said: "The server system has been upgraded so that every day it can ensure hundreds of thousands of visitors to Hai Duong electronic newspaper. Not long ago, there was a day when Hai Duong electronic newspaper recorded nearly 290,000 visits."

Exploiting old documents to serve current work

Storing the content of spoken, visual, radio and printed press works at Hai Duong Newspaper and Radio - Television Station is not purely a mandatory task according to State regulations.

The precious film footage and archived documents are like a "giant history book" that records relatively completely the development process of the homeland and the country in general, and the history of the formation and development of Hai Duong journalism through the periods in particular. In any period, the above documents are still regularly exploited to serve professional tasks in an optimal way. In addition to using the agency's shared documents, journalist Hoang Minh Dung, Head of the Television Editorial Department of Hai Duong Newspaper and Radio - Television Station, also stores many television videos from decades ago on his personal computer.

According to Mr. Dung, in the field of television, storing videos is even more meaningful. Although old, black and white, and of low quality, documentary television footage is very valuable for propaganda work at present and in the future. They make the work more vivid, attractive, and accurately reflect. If a television work mentions past events but only uses graphics and commentary, it will be difficult to convince viewers.

"In 2020, we made a reportage about the Hai Duong Provincial Party Committee's 80th anniversary of the glorious flag. The reportage used many images filmed half a century ago. These are truly valuable documents, helping the reportage to be more authentic and attractive," Mr. Dung gave an example.

Reporter Dang Phuong Linh often re-reads old newspapers.

For Ms. Dang Phuong Linh, a reporter from the Newspaper Reporter Department and many other colleagues, the Hai Duong Newspaper archive is like a "history textbook of Hai Duong journalism". Regularly spending time re-reading old newspapers helps a young reporter like her accumulate a lot of experience in professional activities.

Whenever she has time or is preparing to register articles for special issues on holidays and Tet during the year, Ms. Linh "sets down roots" in the printed newspaper archive to read and look up information.

"Reading old articles helps me broaden my mind and gain a lot of experience in building topics. The experience of previous generations of journalists is basically reflected in each newspaper stored in this archive. We have the responsibility to promote it and make the newspaper better and better," said Ms. Linh.

Digitized documents help the professional activities of journalists.

Thanks to the videos and articles saved on the CMS of Hai Duong Electronic Newspaper, reporters of the Newspaper and Hai Duong Radio - Television Station can re-read, look up information, compare data from many previous years, effectively serving the current news production process.
