The US government has just announced a ban on new oil and gas exploration in many areas of Alaska to protect nearly 4.3 million hectares of Alaska's North Slope, which is home to many spectacular natural landscapes, iconic animal species and many areas of importance to indigenous communities.
The National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska is an important ecological area for polar bears, caribou, and hundreds of thousands of migratory birds. |
According to the Washington Post, this conservation effort covers nearly half of the National Petroleum Reserve of Alaska (NPR-A), which provides habitat for a variety of Arctic wildlife, such as polar bears, caribou and hundreds of thousands of migratory shorebirds.
The US Department of the Interior also announced the cancellation of leases for seven oil and gas exploration sites remaining under the Trump administration.
However, Alaska Oil and Gas Association President Kara Moriarty said the decision would make the US more dependent on foreign oil, which could create more planet-warming emissions than oil extracted in Alaska.
