The Trump administration is considering banning China's AI chatbot DeepSeek from government devices, citing national security concerns.
US government officials are also considering banning the chatbot from app stores and placing limits on how US-based cloud providers can offer DeepSeek AI models to customers, the Wall Street Journal said, adding that those discussions are still in the early stages.
DeepSeek's low-cost AI models sparked a major sell-off in global stock markets in January, as investors feared its emergence could threaten current AI market leaders.
On Thursday, a group of 21 state attorneys general urged Congress to pass a bill that would ban government devices from downloading and using DeepSeek artificial intelligence software on government devices.
With this move, the US is the latest country to have imposed or considered banning Chinese artificial intelligence applications. In mid-February, South Korea's data protection agency blocked new downloads of DeepSeek after the Chinese AI application admitted that it did not take into account some rules on personal data protection in the land of kimchi.
Earlier, Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers urged Australians to be cautious when using Chinese AI models, while Italy and Taiwan (China) asked government employees not to use the DeepSeek chatbot.
