Recently, Dang Tuan Anh - a 12th grade Biology student at Chu Van An High School ( Hanoi ), along with his teammates at the International Biology Olympiad, helped Vietnam reach the top 3 with three Gold Medals and one Silver Medal. According to the Ministry of Education and Training, this is Vietnam's best achievement at the IBO since 2019.

Previously, Tuan Anh also "pocketed" a series of impressive achievements in Biology at competitions such as: Gold Medal - Top student of excellent students of Duyen Hai - Northern Delta specialized schools (grade 10); First prize in Hanoi City's Excellent Biology Students, Gold Medal - Top student of excellent students of Duyen Hai - Northern Delta specialized schools; Second prize in National Excellent Students of Biology (grade 11); First prize - Top student of National Excellent Students of Biology and is 1 of 4 members of the Vietnamese national team participating in the 2024 International Biology Olympiad (grade 12). This male student said that his dream was to study in the Biology specialized class at Chu Van An High School, so he started focusing on studying and reviewing Biology since grade 9. “My house is in the suburbs (Dong Anh), so I don’t have many opportunities to take extra classes like my friends in the inner city. To get into Chu Van An High School, I mainly self-studied. At the entrance exam to grade 10, I was lucky to pass the Biology specialized class at Chu Van An High School. From here, my passion for this subject began to be supported by my teachers,” Tuan Anh said.

The distance from Tuan Anh's house to school is nearly 20km. His parents cannot afford to pick him up, so this male student goes to school by bus. Every day, he leaves home at 5:30 and gets on the bus at 5:50 to get to class on time. His passion for Biology and the dedicated teaching of his teachers have helped Tuan Anh overcome the difficulty of geographical distance, never being late for school even in summer or winter. He also always tries to complete his assignments and search for specialized documents to expand his knowledge of biology without worrying his teachers. Participating in the exam, Tuan Anh and his group went through 2 official exam days with an exam time of 6-8 hours/day. Of which, 1 day of theory exam with 2 papers and 1 day of practice exam with 4 experimental papers on molecular biology, biochemistry, animal anatomy and physiology, and bioinformatics. This year's exam requires candidates to have a good understanding of both theory and practical skills, correctly and effectively applying knowledge and skills of biology from classical to modern in solving many diverse problems of global issues. Before this exam, Tuan Anh and his group focused on reviewing under the guidance of teachers for about 2 weeks. He had access to advanced, new knowledge but it was not easy. “During the time of reviewing for the team, I focused on doing the previous year's questions and reading more famous books to gain knowledge. We were guided on how to argue when encountering new types of questions. I was exposed to theoretical and practical questions, doing experiments on different topics to gain more reflexes and skills. To have a good test, I also listened to the experience sharing from teachers and seniors and especially paid attention to the questions that are easy to make mistakes. For me, the review period, although not long, is very meaningful, helping me to systematize my knowledge scientifically and, importantly, to have the confidence to do the best I can within my ability,” Tuan Anh said. Sharing his study secret, Tuan Anh said that he will finish all the homework that day, not leaving it for another day. My principle in studying Biology is to understand the nature of the knowledge and then apply it in practice exercises. Once I understand the nature of the knowledge, it will be easy to remember. “The more I study and learn, the more I enjoy the categories of knowledge and feel so small. Therefore, I want to read, explore and grasp more knowledge,” this male student shared. To improve his skills, Tuan Anh also registered to participate in many excellent student competitions to test his abilities. Sharing about his future plans, Tuan Anh said he will study General Medicine at Hanoi Medical University to continue pursuing his passion for Biology and fulfill his dream of curing and saving people...
According to information from the Ministry of Education and Training, 4/4 students participating in the 2024 International Biology Olympiad won medals, including 3 Gold medals and 1 Silver medal. Specifically, Dang Tuan Anh, a 12th grade student at Chu Van An High School (Hanoi), won a Gold medal; Nguyen Tien Loc, a 12th grade student at the High School for Gifted Students of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, won a Gold medal; Nguyen Si Hieu, a 12th grade student at Tran Phu High School for Gifted Students (Hai Phong) won a Gold medal. Ho Duc Trung, a 12th grade student at Quoc Hoc High School for Gifted Students (Thua Thien - Hue) won a Silver medal. It is known that the 35th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in 2024 will be held in the Republic of Kazakhstan from July 7 to July 13. This is the exam with the largest number of participating countries ever, with 81 countries and territories and 320 candidates taking the exam.
