Male student with brittle bone disease graduated with honors from the University of Technology

Nguyen Duc Quan, born in 2002, has just graduated with honors from the Mathematics and Information Technology program of Hanoi University of Science and Technology. The boy from Hai Phong has brittle bone disease and for the past 16 years has needed the support of his relatives to go to class.

On the day he received his diploma, Quan emotionally said that this diploma was not only the result of his own efforts but also the efforts of his parents, uncles and teachers who have always helped him during his studies.

Having brittle bone disease, Quan had a broken left arm since birth, making him weak. Less than a month later, he broke his left thigh while changing clothes. Thus, Quan's childhood was more associated with the hospital than the classroom.

To pay for her son’s treatment, Quan’s mother had to scrounge, use up all her savings and borrow money from relatives. The house, the family’s only residence, had to be put up for sale to pay for treatment.

When Quan was 6 years old, his condition improved, and his mother decided to let him go to school like his friends. But when he went to school, Ms. Tran Thi Thap had to take him to and from school 8 times a day. Reluctantly, she quit her job as chief accountant at a leather shoe company to accompany her son. Every day, in addition to taking her son to and from school, she opened a vegetable stall to earn extra income.

Many times, Quan felt like he was “like a burden”. But then, he thought, “My fate is like that, instead of blaming myself, why don’t I try harder every day?” Therefore, throughout his high school years, Quan never wanted to stop studying. “With knowledge, I can do useful things, to make my parents less tired”, Quan said.

As for Quan's mother, she witnessed her son being hospitalized many times due to falling and breaking bones. Although it was heartbreaking, when she saw that her son was still optimistic and wanted to go to school, Ms. Thap could only encourage him: "Let's try our best together."

There was also a time, before entering the school-level Math exam, Quan tripped and fell right in front of the exam room door. At that time, Quan only felt a little pain and thought he had a cramp. Although his friends helped him into the room, he still tried to complete the exam well.

That year, Quan scored a perfect 300/300 and won first place. However, the fall also caused him to break his femur, which required surgery to repair. To recover, Quan had to miss the entire second semester of 9th grade.

Although he could not go to school, the male student still received treatment and continued his studies right from his hospital bed. Time constraints forced Quan to drop out of the entrance exam to the city's specialized school, but thanks to his achievements, Quan was still admitted directly to the Math gifted class of the top public school in Hai Phong .

When Quan passed the entrance exam to Hanoi University of Science and Technology, because of work, his parents could not be there to take care of him, so Quan's uncle came to Hanoi to take care of him. For the past 4 years, it was his uncle who always accompanied and took Quan to class every day.

Luckily, during this time, Quan's health problems were no longer a barrier. However, in the beginning, he had difficulty adjusting to the new school because he was not used to the way of studying. "In high school, I was used to reviewing in the form of lessons; I would take notes of what the teachers said. When I went to university, the exams were more creative and difficult. After about a semester of applying the old way of studying, I felt it was not effective."

Receiving 2 Ds in the first semester, achieving CPA 2.18, Quan was shocked and decided to change his way of studying. In addition to listening to the teachers in class, the male student also expanded and reviewed deeply to thoroughly understand the nature of the problem.

“For math subjects, I often study with a group of friends. We find exercises and practice together. For political theory subjects, I often write them over and over again to remember them. I have maintained this way of studying, and at the same time increased my diligence to improve my results.” Thanks to that, in the following semesters, Quan gradually made clear progress.

At the graduation thesis defense session, standing before the council, Quan confidently presented the topic he had devoted himself to researching and building data for over 3 months, related to predicting diabetes using logistic regression and the KNN algorithm. Thanks to that, Quan scored 9 points, had a CPA of 3.37/4 for the entire course, and graduated with honors.

Looking back on the student's 4-year journey, Dr. Nguyen Phuong Thuy, manager and academic advisor, assessed Quan as being determined, persistent, serious in his studies and always exuding positive energy.

“Whether in class or at reunions, Quan always arrives before everyone else and has never been absent from any class. He always looks at everything with a positive, optimistic perspective,” said teacher Thuy.

For Quan, the thing he regrets after 4 years of university is not spending much time on research and not being able to participate in some sports activities like football, even though he loves it very much.

Currently, Quan's health has gradually stabilized, his legs can walk by themselves but he cannot climb slopes, climb stairs or walk long distances. Right after the graduation ceremony, Quan was picked up by his parents to go home.

The young man born in 2002 hopes that during this time he can find a job he loves in Hai Phong to help his parents and take care of his sister.
