49 days is like a lifetime
This morning, September 5, Nguyen Huu Phuoc, 18 years old, Dai Thanh commune, Hanoi, attended the opening ceremony at the University of Transport Technology in Trieu Khuc street, Hanoi, then hurried back home in Dai Thanh commune. There, a 49-day memorial service was taking place for his four blood relatives: father, mother, older sister and younger sister. They all died in the boat capsize in Ha Long on July 19.

Phuoc was also a victim of that shipwreck. That day, his father decided to "reward" the whole family with a trip to Ha Long, after his son got his high school graduation exam results. It was the first time Phuoc's whole family had gone on a trip together. Then, suddenly, disaster struck. Before he could rejoice at being alive, Phuoc faced the cruel reality of losing all his closest relatives.
Phuoc sadly said: "My younger sister would have attended the opening ceremony today. If she were still alive, she would be in 3rd grade this year. There are 3 sisters in the family, but the older sister is working so my younger sister and I are very close to each other, even though she always bullies her older brother. We have a lot of memories, but I don't want to remember them, I just want to forget them."
Recalling the long 49-day journey, Phuoc shared: "At first, I was very depressed, but then I had to accept the truth. Luckily, I had the support of my grandparents, uncles, aunts and many other relatives, so I gradually calmed down. I determined that now I have to look forward and strive for the future."
Phuoc was determined to go to college. His father was a driver, his salary was not much, and he had to spend most of it on his mother’s treatment (she had cancer). Therefore, before the tragic boat accident, Phuoc had planned to try to find a part-time job while studying at university to help his father.
Now he has to take care of everything himself. Phuc doesn't know if he can handle it, but he tells himself to try his best.
The lecture hall doors are open wide
But fate did not want Phuoc to push himself too hard. He was accepted into his dream major, artificial intelligence and smart transportation at the University of Transport Technology.
On the opening morning (after the online opening ceremony), Phuoc was awarded a full scholarship by the school, estimated at about 250 million VND, including: full tuition exemption for the course (4.5 years); free dormitory accommodation; living allowance of 3 million VND/month.

Phuoc shared: "I am really grateful to the school. Now I don't have to worry about making a living, I can focus on studying well. But I still want to work part-time, both to earn more income and to practice my independence."
It is known that at first, the University of Transport Technology did not know about Phuoc's situation. However, during the admission confirmation period, Phuoc's family brought him to explain his situation to the Admissions Board. After listening to the Admissions Board's report, Principal Nguyen Hoang Long immediately decided to award Phuoc a full scholarship.
Associate Professor Nguyen Hoang Long said: "We hope that with this scholarship and the care and support of teachers and students, Phuoc will have a solid foundation to confidently step on the future path ahead. We also hope that Phuoc will consider the University of Transport Technology as his second home. During his studies, teachers and students will not only help him improve his professional skills but also involve him in activities, helping him quickly overcome his pain."
Associate Professor Nguyen Hoang Long added that this year, the University of Transport Technology's scholarship fund will award about 1 billion VND to new students. Some scholarships are awarded to students with academic achievements, such as valedictorian is awarded 100 million VND, and salutatorian is awarded 50 million VND.
But the school also gives most of the scholarships to students in difficult circumstances. This year, in addition to Phuoc, the school also waived all tuition and dormitory fees for a paralyzed student (studying at Vinh Phuc campus).
In the near future, according to Associate Professor Nguyen Hoang Long, the school will continue to review. If among the new students admitted this year, there are students with difficult circumstances but still determined to overcome adversity, the school will support them to have more motivation to study well.
