The characteristic of Khmer wedding dress is solemnity but still discreet, neat design, convenient for moving and performing rituals.
Charm makes identity
Amidst the vibrant pentatonic music, in the solemn yet joyful ceremonies, the image of the Khmer couple standing out in their traditional costumes always leaves an impression on the attendees. The Khmer wedding dress is not simply an outfit for the big day, but also a symbol of love, faith and national pride.
Mr. Danh Nhieu, Head of the Ca Nhung Pagoda Ritual Committee (Dinh Hoa Commune) said: “During the wedding ceremony, the bride was radiant in a xam pot, a soft scarf and a graceful headdress. The groom exuded a strong, mature look in a sarong, a long-sleeved shirt with a standing collar and a traditional scarf around his shoulders. The image of the couple walking side by side is considered a symbol of lasting love and the bond between husband and wife.”
Each color contains a wish such as : red for lasting happiness ; yellow symbolizes wealth and prosperity ; purple and blue represent steadfast loyalty.
Shirt and waistband are held tight by a shiny metal belt, highlighting a slim figure.
The indispensable highlight is the sbay scarf - a soft silk strip wrapped diagonally from the left shoulder to the right hip, studded with thousands of sparkling sequins in an elaborate pattern.
The complete ceremonial outfit includes a three-tiered, pointed, flower-adorned, pearl-and-beaded headpiece, reminiscent of the elegance of ancient princesses.
The Khmer groom exudes maturity and strength in a sarong combined with a long-sleeved shirt with a standing collar, slit in the front, and neatly buttoned.
In the wedding ceremony, the groom holds a sword - a symbol of strength and meaning that from now on the groom will be the support and protection of the bride against all difficulties in life.
Keep the soul in modern life
Amidst the modern pace of life, Khmer wedding dresses still retain their own appeal thanks to their uniqueness and rich identity. They blend the past and present, connect art and religion, and are filled with the joy of couples and community pride. Many families prepare three to four different sets of costumes for each ceremony such as: the bride-processing ceremony, the wrist-tying ceremony, and the blessing ceremony.
Ms. Thi Chanh Da, owner of a Khmer wedding dress studio in An Giang, said: "In recent years, more young Khmer people choose traditional costumes, so I also import many designs to meet the demand."
Today's young Khmer generation is inheriting, preserving and promoting the charm of traditional wedding dresses.
Each traditional wedding costume of the Khmer people carries a unique color and message, making Khmer weddings always full of color.
Every year at the Khmer Culture, Sports and Tourism Festival in An Giang province, a Khmer traditional art festival takes place , including a traditional wedding costume performance, contributing to preserving and promoting the traditional value of Khmer wedding costumes.
