Japanese politician apologizes for bizarre comments about women

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên12/11/2024

Japan's Conservative Party leader Hyakuta Naoki has apologized for raising the issue of banning women from marriage and requiring sterilization.

In a speech in Nagoya on November 10, Mr. Hyakuta had to publicly apologize for his previous remarks on a live broadcast on November 8. At that time, he raised the idea that to focus on efforts to have children earlier in the context of Japan's plummeting birth rate, women from 18 years old cannot go to university, they also cannot marry after 25 years old and must be sterilized after 30 years old.

Although he himself asserted that he did not support the above hypothesis, raising the issue has made many people angry. "I retract my words and apologize for those who felt offended," he said on November 10.

He also wrote an apology on social network X, admitting that he had made excessive statements, although he emphasized that the ideas presented in the program were "fictional" and should not happen.

Ms. Arimoto Kaori, a member of his Conservative Party, said the above statements were inappropriate, even in a fictional context.

Statistics released by the Ministry of Health , Labor and Welfare in June showed that in 2023, the total fertility rate, which represents the number of children a woman will give birth to in her lifetime, fell for the eighth consecutive year in Japan to a record low of 1.20, down 0.06 points from the same period a year earlier. Japan's demographic reports also raised the challenge of addressing the country's aging population.

The Conservative Party founded by Mr. Hyakuta in 2023 won three seats in the lower house of parliament in the October election, meeting the criteria to become a political party under Japanese law.
