Russia is ready to negotiate peace with Ukraine but will not give up its conditions, Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrei Kelin said in an interview with BBC on May 28.
TASS news agency quoted Ambassador Kelin as saying that Russia wants peace, but of course on certain conditions. For Russia, there are two important things. First, there should be no threat from Ukraine to Russia. Second, Russians in Ukraine should be treated like all other countries in the world , "like the French are treated in Belgium or like Italians and Germans are treated in Switzerland."
Mr. Kelin expressed concern about developments in Ukraine in recent years such as "extreme nationalism."
Mr Kelin said peace could be achieved tomorrow if Ukraine was prepared to negotiate, but he was concerned there was no basis for this.
The Russian diplomat also does not believe that simply stopping the conflict is a good idea because it does not create the foundation for a stable and lasting peace in Europe.
Russia's ambassador to the UK has reiterated that Moscow has no intention of using nuclear weapons in the conflict in Ukraine. However, he expressed concern about the continued escalation of the conflict, citing the accelerated supply of weapons to Kiev.
Previously, on May 26, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin said that Ukraine's refusal to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU) and returning to neutrality are among the conditions for achieving peace.
Deputy Minister Galuzin made it clear that Russia believes a solution can only be reached if the Armed Forces of Ukraine cease hostilities and the West stops supplying weapons.
To achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace, Ukraine must return to its non-aligned neutrality, affirmed in the 1990 Declaration of State Sovereignty , and refuse to join the above two mechanisms.
Previously, Russia repeatedly stated that the West's provision of new weapons to Ukraine, including fighter jets, would not fundamentally change the course of the special military campaign.
That has brought the West increasingly into the conflict and brought with it many risks. Russia stressed that this requires Moscow to take certain precautions.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on May 27 that, speaking during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow, China's Special Envoy for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui stated: "Based on the terms of the document 'China's Position on the Political Solution to the Ukraine Crisis ', Beijing will continue to promote cooperation and dialogue with all parties, including Russia, and make genuine efforts for a political solution to the Ukraine crisis."
He affirmed that China has always adhered to a fair and objective stance on Ukraine, pursuing peace and promoting negotiations./.
