The New York Post reported on January 27 that employees at a pho restaurant in San Jose (California, USA) had just prevented a "kidnapping" of a serving robot worth 18,000 USD (more than 450 million VND).

Security camera footage from Pho 21 shows a man arriving at the restaurant at around 7:40 a.m. on January 19, just 20 minutes before opening time. The man asks to use the restroom and disappears from the screen.

The man then returned and attempted to pick up one of the three robot waiters in the shop, holding the robot horizontally as if he was wrestling it, before carrying it out. Under the weight of the robot, the "kidnapper" strutted out the door.

A pho restaurant employee discovered and tried to stop the strange man’s strange actions. When he went outside, the man dragged the robot onto the sidewalk and threw it into the back of his car.

The robot was in the trunk for about 10 seconds before other pho restaurant employees arrived and wrestled it away. They called the police after the man gave up.

According to ABC 7 News, quoting Tony Ngo, owner of Pho 21, the robot, which costs $18,000, would be useless in the hands of a thief because it is specially programmed and cannot be used outside the store.

The news report said no one or the robot was injured in the incident. The robot then returned to serve pho according to its programming, while the identity of the thief and how the authorities handled the incident are still unknown.

Robots are developing rapidly and seem to be popping up everywhere, while no one knows for sure what they will be able to do in just a few years.

Researchers are working to create artificial intelligence (AI) robots that can express emotions and replace some important human roles.
