Republican Congressman Offers to Vote on DOGE's Government-Cutting Act

Republican senators have told billionaire Elon Musk that decisions to cut government jobs and budgets need to be voted on by Congress .

According to The Hill newspaper on March 5, Mr. Musk had lunch with Republican senators and provided an overview of the work of the US Government Efficiency Commission (DOGE) to cut federal programs considered wasteful.

Senator Rand Paul said DOGE’s efforts to cut the federal government could be unsanctioned by the courts unless Congress passed a spending reduction bill, citing the US Supreme Court’s March 5 decision to block the freeze on the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

“I like everything they’re doing, but we have to vote for it. Then we need 50 or 51 senators to vote for spending cuts,” said Rand Paul.

Senate Budget Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham said Senate Republicans support the position of voting for the cuts. Republican lawmakers say Elon Musk did not inform them about DOGE's moves.

The Hill said this reflects Mr. Musk’s belief that he can bypass Congress by simply seizing funds that have been legally appropriated by Congress. On March 5, the billionaire said he did not know that Congress could pass a spending cut package with a simple majority of the Senate (at least 50 people) instead of the 60 senators who would need to approve it.

Some senators have complained about a lack of communication between Congress and Mr. Musk’s team, and were somewhat surprised by the layoff announcement. “Every day is a different surprise,” Senator Susan Collins said last week, arguing that a clear approach to government reform would be better than Mr. Musk’s hard-line approach.
