On March 8, the Ca Mau Center for Clean Water and Environmental Sanitation reported that drought has caused localized water shortages in many areas, causing more than 3,000 households in the province to currently lack water for daily activities. In some places, people have to use salt water for household activities.
People in Bien Bach commune, Thoi Binh district (Ca Mau) have to buy fresh water from boats at the price of 40,000 - 50,000 VND/cubic meter.
A typical example is Bien Bach commune, Thoi Binh district, with 1,847 households, but more than 450 households lack water for daily use. The leader of Bien Bach commune People's Committee informed that people in the commune use the same water supply station in Tan Bang commune (bordering Bien Bach commune).
However, recently, severe drought and increased water demand have left most people in Thanh Tung hamlet, Bien Bach commune without clean water. People have to buy fresh water from boats at a price of 40,000 - 50,000 VND/cubic meter.
People in Bien Bach commune, Thoi Binh district (Ca Mau) prepare water containers every time the dry season comes but still do not have enough to use.
Mr. Le Tuan Anh (residing in Bien Bach commune) said: "My family has 3 people, my wife, me and my children spend almost 500,000 VND on water every month. Meanwhile, the family's main income depends on my job, about 2 million VND per month."
The dry season comes, to have water for daily use, people in Bien Bach commune just wait for boats carrying clean water to sell.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung (living in Bien Bach commune) said that although he saves as much as possible by using salt water to wash dishes, shower (then rinse with fresh water)... but since the beginning of the dry season until now, his family has had to pay more than 2.5 million VND for water. Although there is a water pipe to Mr. Tung's house, for the past 5 months not a drop of water has flowed through the pipe.
