Outstanding athletes, won historic gold medals, bringing glory to Vietnamese sports

Nguyen Thi Oanh's poker (4) in athletics, historic gold medal in golf, and absolute victory in aerobics contributed to the success of the Vietnamese delegation at SEA Games 32.

Before the 32nd SEA Games opened, the Vietnamese sports delegation had already won the first gold medal in the conch shell chess event. The two players Ton Nu Hong An and Pham Thanh Phuong Thao won the 60-minute team event.

In the first days of the 32nd SEA Games, swimming brought home many emotional medals. "Frog Prince" Pham Thanh Bao continued to be an outstanding swimmer when he successfully defended his gold medal in the 100m breaststroke, even breaking the SEA Games record. He also won the 200m breaststroke for the first time and set a new record for the games.

After winning the two individual events, Tran Hung Nguyen and Huy Hoang continued to defend their gold medals with Hoang Quy Phuoc and Nguyen Huu Kim Son in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay. The "hot boys" had a spectacular and dramatic sprint.

The Vietnamese women's 3x3 basketball team won the SEA Games for the first time after defeating the Philippines in the final match. The outstanding performance of Vietnamese-American athletes Truong Thao My and Truong Thao Vy, along with teammates Tieu Duy and Huynh Ngoan, brought home a historic gold medal for Vietnamese basketball.

Nguyen Thi Oanh is the most outstanding athlete of Vietnam when winning 4 individual gold medals at SEA Games 32. She successfully defended her championship in 5,000 m, 1,500 m and 3,000 m obstacle course, then won the 10,000 m. Notably, the "superwoman" from Bac Giang also made a strong impression when winning two gold medals within 30 minutes.

In addition to Nguyen Thi Oanh, other Vietnamese female athletes also had a successful competition. Runner Nguyen Thi Huyen contributed to two gold medals in the women's 4x400m relay and the mixed 4x400m relay. She also successfully defended the 400m hurdles. Thu Ha won the gold medal in the 800m race, Huynh Thi My Tien won the 100m hurdles. Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc and Linh Na both successfully defended their 20km walk and heptathlon titles.

15-year-old athlete Le Khanh Hung brought home a historic gold medal for Vietnamese golf at the 32nd SEA Games. Afterwards, Hung and his teammates won another team silver medal.

Aerobics was the sport that won the absolute victory at this year’s SEA Games. Vietnamese athletes won all 5 gold medals in individual men’s, women’s, team of 3, mixed doubles and team of 5.

Table tennis also had a precious gold medal after 26 years of waiting. The duo Tran Mai Ngoc and Dinh Anh Hoang won convincingly against their Singaporean opponents in the mixed doubles final. 19-year-old Mai Ngoc left her mark with her passionate playing style and steady mentality in the competition with a higher-rated opponent.

Defeating Myanmar 2-0 in the final, the Vietnamese women's football team won the SEA Games for the fourth consecutive time. This is a record of the tournament. Coach Mai Duc Chung and his team came to Cambodia with many difficulties such as injuries to key players and many young players in the squad, but the team still achieved the highest results.

On the final day of competition at the 32nd SEA Games, weightlifter Nguyen Quoc Toan opened the gold medal with a record-breaking performance in three games. He set new records in the snatch, clean and jerk and total lift. The athlete from Bac Lieu and coach Luong Thi Bich Tuyen celebrated the sweet results after more than a year of training to move from 81 kg to 89 kg.

The Vietnamese sports delegation won the overall title at the SEA Games for the third time and the first time it won this position at a tournament not held in its home country.

With 136 gold medals, 105 silver medals and 114 bronze medals, Vietnam is 28 gold medals ahead of the second-placed team, Thailand.

The group's "gold mines" continue to be diving, athletics, swimming, gymnastics, wrestling and martial arts.

At 7:00 p.m. tonight (May 17), the closing ceremony of the 32nd SEA Games will take place at Morodok Techo National Stadium, Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
