Female student wins first prize in Hanoi's excellent student competition

VnExpressVnExpress08/03/2024

Hanoi After only a few months of studying Chemistry, Khanh Hoa entered the school team, competed in the higher level competition and won first prize in the city.

Tran Khanh Hoa, Archimedes Academy Secondary School, won first prize in the city-level Chemistry competition. Hoa is the only 8th grader this year to achieve this result in Chemistry.

"I was very happy and surprised," Hoa said. She expected to get 18 points but ended up getting just over 17 points, so she was disappointed, thinking she would only get second place.

Hoa started middle school with a specialized Math class. Her older sister was studying Chemistry at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, and Hoa was inspired and gradually fell in love with the subject. At the end of 7th grade, she began to focus on Chemistry, aiming to join the national team.

According to Hoa, at first she thought she would accumulate knowledge to take part in the gifted student exam in grade 9. However, because the textbooks and curriculum for grade 9 will change next year, she decided to "take a gamble" and try to take the exam from grade 8.

The female student admitted that it was "a bit difficult" to both fill in basic knowledge and supplement advanced knowledge to pass the school's team selection round in August 2023.

Hoa bought many books and materials to study by herself. At home, she redid the exercises given by her teachers 2-3 times to remember the knowledge. If she did not understand any part, she asked her sister to explain it again or called her teacher to ask. On average, the female student did about two exercises per day. At first, her speed was not fast, Hoa improved by setting a timer and gradually reducing the completion time from 180 minutes to 120 minutes.

"I work until I get bored. Some days I work less, the next day I work harder to ensure I have enough knowledge. I have to try 3-4 times harder than other students," Hoa shared. The female student said that to focus on Chemistry, she pays attention to lectures and completes her assignments right in class.

After being selected for the school team, Hoa won third place at the district level, then was selected for the city-level exam preparation team. She said that this year's exam was more difficult than previous years, with some strange questions that could easily fool candidates. If she lost focus, she could make mistakes.

The test was related to a lot of inorganic chemistry knowledge, in which the question about diagrams took the most time. She remembered the teacher's encouragement and calmed down to handle the question. Hoa said she was lucky because she had solid knowledge so she finally found the answer and completed the test.

"I only made a few small mistakes and lost points in my presentation," said a female student in class 8C3.

Ms. Lu Anh Ngoc, homeroom teacher of class 8C3, commented that Hoa is intelligent, has personality and is constantly trying.

"Hoa has only been studying Chemistry for such a short time, but with her determination, she has quickly made a breakthrough and achieved proud results," said Ms. Ngoc, adding that Hoa is also an active class monitor and gets along well with her classmates.

Hoa plans to continue taking Chemistry exams in the near future. She will also allocate time for Math, Literature, and English, with the goal of passing the 10th grade Chemistry major at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School.
