Desire to get rich
Born and raised in the countryside of Quang Dien, Ngo Van Duy, residing in Thu Le 3 village, understands the hardships of making a living of the people here. Not accepting the old mindset of making just enough to eat, Duy struggled to find a new model that was suitable for local conditions.
After a period of research, with an initial capital of only 10 million VND, Duy decided to invest in raising bamboo rats - a wild rodent with delicious meat, which is popular in the market. He went to a bamboo rat farm in Binh Dien and bought 5 pairs of breeding rats to raise.
“At first, I encountered many difficulties, especially in terms of technique. But thanks to persistently researching models on social networks, books and newspapers, and participating in livestock groups to learn, I gradually overcame the difficulties. The cage for raising bamboo rats is also quite simple, just needing to assemble ceramic tiles into squares. Food is readily available in nature such as bamboo, sugarcane, corn... so the bamboo rat population grows quickly,” Duy shared.
After about 6 - 7 months, the bamboo rats begin to reproduce. Each year, bamboo rats can give birth to 3 litters, each litter has 2 - 3 babies. After about 7 months of raising, the weight of the commercial bamboo rats reaches over 1kg, and can be sold. Thanks to that, his bamboo rat herd has grown to more than 80.
The output of the model is also quite favorable. The finished bamboo rats are purchased by traders at home and supplied to specialty restaurants. The price ranges from 550,000 - 1,200,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, Duy earns about 80 million VND per year.
Not only selling bamboo rats for meat, Duy also breeds them to provide to those who want to raise them in Phong Dien, Huong Thuy, and Huong Tra. “I am currently raising 20 bamboo rats for breeding, hoping to have a good source of breed to serve people and at the same time expand the model,” Duy said.
This initial success has helped Duy prove that starting a business in rural areas is not a distant dream if you have the will and a scientific approach.
Spreading creativity among young people
Ngo Van Duy’s start-up story has spread the spirit of creativity among the youth in Quang Dien. Many members and young people have come to visit, learn, and want to replicate the model. That resonance not only encourages the spirit of self-reliance and entrepreneurship among young people but also contributes to the formation of new and diverse economic directions for the locality.
Recognizing the potential of the economic model of member Ngo Van Duy, the Quang Dien Commune Youth Union promptly paid attention, encouraged and provided practical support. By taking specific actions such as introducing suitable loan sources, instructing on simple production techniques, and connecting product consumption within the locality; being ready to support and connect... helped Duy start his business more smoothly, especially in borrowing capital.
“In the context of integration, accompanying young entrepreneurs does not only stop at providing capital or technical support, but also needs to create a favorable environment for them to confidently develop their capacity. Training programs, connecting businesses, introducing products to a wider market... are the "push" to strongly promote the spirit of daring to think and daring to do in young people", affirmed Ms. Nguyen Thi Thai Hoa, Secretary of the Youth Union of Quang Dien commune.
