Ensuring electricity supply on remote islands

Phu Quy - an island off the coast of Lam Dong, surrounded by waves, is still lit up every night like a lighthouse in the middle of the ocean. To ensure electricity supply, there are people who work hard day and night.

“The electricity system on Phu Quy Island is unique compared to other localities in the province. This is an independent electricity system, not connected to the national electricity system. Power sources on Phu Quy Island include diesel, wind and solar energy. All power sources provide electricity for approximately 9,000 customers. On average, each year, we provide about 32 - 33 million kWh, meeting the needs of daily life as well as production and business, especially serving tourism ,” informed Mr. Pham Van Thanh - Head of the Phu Quy Special Zone Electricity Management Team.

Being over 100 km away from the mainland, providing electricity for the needs on Phu Quy Island is not easy. Before 2014, the electricity on the island was not enough to maintain, and intermittent supply occurred frequently. In 2018, the electricity industry invested in the project "Developing and modernizing the power source system - power grid of Phu Quy Island District". After completing the project, the power grid and power sources were developed and modernized, helping the power system on Phu Quy Island become one of the modern systems. "When carrying out comprehensive system renovation, the electricity industry applied modern technology and digital transformation, especially investing in SCADA remote monitoring and control systems, which can monitor and control generators at the power plant in Phu Quy. Data collection, monitoring, operation and troubleshooting; operational management data are guaranteed to be accurate and timely, improving the reliability of power supply and power supply services for customers", Mr. Pham Van Thanh shared. Mr. Thanh said that currently, customers using electricity in Phu Quy have the same price as the whole country, high safety, and continuous electricity supply without interruption.

“Phu Quy is an island, so it is far from the mainland, so transporting materials for the electricity industry is very expensive. Sunlight and sea breeze also cause machinery, wind turbines, etc. to quickly deteriorate, making them prone to problems. At that time, the team's staff and workers must quickly find solutions, handle repairs, and ensure continuous power supply for customers. Especially during the North wind season, waves and winds make transportation difficult, and the electricity industry must work hard to perform its tasks,” Mr. Pham Van Thanh informed. Fortunately, with the investment, Phu Quy Electricity has also effectively deployed a grid operation management system with a smart model combining a geographic information system (GIS) and installing 100% electronic meters, helping to reduce the workload for workers as well as increase the safety of electricity supply.

Currently, the Phu Quy Special Zone Electricity Management Team has 66 workers. Most of the brothers and sisters, whether from the island or the mainland, are attached to the island. “We live here, our families, relatives and friends are all on the island, the light that reaches customers is also the light in our own families. That is why every job of an electrician is full of responsibility. We try our best to complete the targets assigned by Lam Dong Electricity Company. Especially in the incident target, no matter how difficult it is, we always try our best to ensure safety. During rough seas and stormy seasons, we closely monitor each electric pole and each transformer station to ensure the safety of the system,” said Mr. Pham Van Thanh.

Currently, one of the important sources of electricity for the Phu Quy power system is green electricity - electricity from renewable energy such as wind power and solar power. These are potential sources of electricity, which will completely replace diesel power sources in the future. Currently, the electricity industry has been accompanying customers, mobilizing and encouraging customers to proactively install and use this abundant energy source.
