Assembled cars "force" imported cars to compete in price reduction

From September 1, 2024, domestically manufactured and assembled cars (CKD) will begin to enjoy a 50% registration fee support policy according to the provisions of Decree 109/2024/ND-CP of the Government . The registration fee support period lasts for 3 months until November 30, 2024.

With 50% support for registration fees, consumers who buy CKD cars during the period when Decree 109/2024/ND-CP takes effect will save about 5-6% of the car price depending on the registration fee level in each locality. This is considered a significant pressure on completely imported cars (CBU).

In the context of the purchasing power in the whole market still not showing much improvement, CBU cars are forced to rush into a price reduction race to maintain competitiveness.

Subaru Forester

The Japanese brand's best-selling SUV model has been discounted by hundreds of millions of dong by its official distributor in October 2024.

The standard Forester iL version is reduced by 100 million VND to 869 million VND. The mid-range Forester iL EyeSight version is reduced by 170 million VND to 929 million VND. The deepest reduction is the high-end Forester iS EyeSight version with a retail price of only 969 million VND, a reduction of 230 million VND.

Subaru Forester is currently distributed in the market and is imported completely from Thailand. According to the announcement from Subaru Vietnam, the C-size SUV will start to be imported directly from Japan from 2025.

Skoda Karoq and Kodiaq

Both SUV models Karoq and Kodiaq are being discounted by the Czech car brand equivalent to 100% of the registration fee.

Accordingly, the retail price directly to consumers in October 2024 of the Karoq model will decrease by 100-130 million VND to 999 million VND to 1.089 billion VND depending on the version. The Kodiaq model will be discounted by 119-169 million VND to 1.189-1.409 billion VND.

Volkswagen Teramont, Teramont X and Touareg

The German car brand has reduced prices for its three best-selling SUV models on the market, Teramont, Teramont X and Touareg. The discounts for the three imported SUV models are equivalent to 50% of the registration fee.

Specifically, the 7-seat SUV Teramont imported from the US has a price reduction of up to 500 million VND to 1.998 billion VND, a reduction of 500 million VND. The 5-seat Teramont X imported from China has a price reduction of 100-130 million VND to 1.998-2.168 billion VND. Volkswagen Vietnam's most expensive high-chassis vehicle, the Touareg, has a price reduction of about 135-186 million VND to 2.699-3.099 billion VND.

Ford Explorer

The full-size Ford Explorer SUV is currently being discounted by the American automaker from 50 million VND to approximately 105 million VND.

Specifically, when buying a car with a red or blue exterior, consumers will receive a discount of 105 million VND, equivalent to 50% of the registration fee. Cars with a white or black exterior will receive a direct deduction of 50 million VND from the recommended retail price.

Ford Explorer imported from the US is currently distributed on the market with a retail price of 2.099 billion VND. The car is a direct competitor to Volkswagen Touareg and Toyota Land Prado.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

In the 7-seat D-size SUV segment, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is often outsold by its competitors Toyota Fortuner, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Ford Everest in terms of sales. This is also the reason why Mitsubishi decided to reduce the price of Pajero Sport by 100% of the registration fee.

Accordingly, consumers buying Japanese car models in October 2024 will save about 113-163 million VND in registration fees.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is currently being officially distributed on the market with a retail price of 1.13-1.365 billion VND, equivalent to the new generation Ford Everest and Hyundai Santa Fe.

Honda Accord

Although not focusing on Accord sales, Honda Vietnam joint venture still applies a discount policy in October for imported D-size sedan models.

Accordingly, consumers who buy Honda Accord are currently receiving a discount of up to 220 million VND. With this deep discount, the actual retail price of Accord is only 1.099 billion VND.

Honda Accord is imported from Thailand. The car competes directly with its compatriots such as Toyota Camry and Mazda6. In Honda Vietnam's product portfolio, Accord is one of the models with the lowest sales volume, although in the D-segment sedan segment, this is a model that is highly appreciated for its performance.
