“By winning the majority of votes in the July 5 election, Mr. Pezeshkian became the next president of Iran,” the ministry said.

In the second round of elections held yesterday, the voter turnout was around 50%, seeing two candidates Pezeshkian and former nuclear negotiator SaeedJalili running for the position of President of Iran.

The second round of voting took place after the first round on June 28 with a voter turnout rate of 40%.

Iranian voters go to the polls to choose a successor to the late President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash earlier in May.

Iranian voters cast their ballots in the second round of the presidential election between Masoud Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili in Tehran, Iran, July 5, 2024.

The election comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East due to conflicts between Israel and Hamas forces in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as increased Western pressure on Iran over its nuclear program.

After the second round of voting results, Mr. Pezeshkian's supporters took to the streets in many cities and towns across the country, including Mr. Pezeshkian's hometown of Urmia, to celebrate the new president's victory.

Analysts say Mr Pezeshkian's victory could spur a foreign policy push aimed at easing tensions in stalled talks between Iran and world powers aimed at restoring the 2015 nuclear deal.

Mr. Pezeshkian also vowed to revive an economy that has been affected by sanctions that were reimposed in 2018, after the United States under President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran.
