In a congratulatory message to former US President Donald Trump on his victory in the 2024 presidential election, Chinese President Xi Jinping "pointed out that history has proven that China and the US benefit from cooperation and suffer from confrontation," according to AFP citing information from China Central Television (CCTV).

Donald Trump during his first term as US president met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Japan in June 2019.

“A stable, healthy and sustainable China-US relationship is in the common interests of both countries and in line with the expectations of the international community,” Xi stressed, calling on Washington and Beijing to “strengthen dialogue and communication” and “appropriately control differences.”

Xi also stressed that the two countries must “find the right way… to get along in this new era, which will benefit both countries and the world.” The Chinese leader said he hoped “both sides will uphold the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.”

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng also sent a message to US Vice President-elect JD Vance, according to CCTV.

What Trump's victory means for the world

Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on November 6 hailed a new start in relations with the US, although Mr. Trump's first term saw a disruption in diplomatic relations between Venezuela and the US, according to AFP.

“In his first term, President Donald Trump did not succeed for us. This is a new beginning that we believe will be successful and good for the United States and Venezuela,” Mr. Maduro said in a televised speech.

President Maduro's government had earlier congratulated Mr Trump on his election victory, promising to establish "good relations".

Caracas cut ties with Washington in 2019 after the US recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela's interim president.

The US and dozens of other countries made the decision after the 2018 election, in which Mr. Maduro was declared the winner, despite widespread allegations of fraud, according to AFP.

During his first term as president, Mr Trump led international efforts to force Mr Maduro from power by imposing sweeping sanctions on Venezuela's vital oil sector, measures that were later eased by US President Joe Biden, according to AFP.
