If elected president, Mr. Trump said he would consider inviting billionaire Elon Musk to join the cabinet because this billionaire is smart, but would still end tax incentives for electric cars.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced on August 19 that if elected, he would consider ending the $7,500 tax exemption for electric vehicle purchases. At the same time, he opened up the possibility of bringing Tesla CEO Elon Musk into the cabinet or giving him an advisory role. "Tax exemptions and tax incentives are generally not a good thing," Trump told Reuters after a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. When asked if he would consider appointing billionaire Musk to an advisory role or a cabinet job, the former US president said he would consider: "He (Elon Musk) is a very smart person. I would certainly consider it, if he agrees." According to Reuters, billionaire Musk publicly supported Republican candidate Trump in the race to the White House in July. However, Tesla has not responded to Trump's latest comments. Last week, Mr. Trump interviewed tech mogul Musk on social network X. Both had many words attacking Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Previously, Mr. Trump said he changed his views on electric cars when billionaire Musk endorsed him. “I support electric cars. I have to support them because Elon Musk supports me so strongly. I have no choice,” Mr. Trump said at a rally in early August. If elected, Mr. Trump could take steps to reverse US Treasury Department rules that make it easier for electric car makers to take advantage of the $7,500 tax exemption, or he could ask the US Congress to abolish it entirely.
