Building quality training centers
On July 25, 2025, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Decision No. 2145/QD-BGDDT, officially approving the policy of establishing Thai Nguyen University Branch in Dien Bien province. This is an important step in the strategy of developing higher education in mountainous areas and a big boost to the quality of human resources for Dien Bien province and neighboring localities.
Thai Nguyen University Branch in Dien Bien Province was established on the basis of converting and inheriting the foundation from Dien Bien Pedagogical College. According to the approved plan, the main campus of the Branch will be located at Dien Bien Pedagogical College, and the second campus will be at the Provincial Medical College.
The total land area assigned to the Branch is over 53,400m², including all training facilities such as classrooms, practice rooms, dormitories, libraries, multi-purpose halls... The facilities are assessed to ensure effective use, meeting training requirements according to university and postgraduate standards.
According to the plan, in the first phase (2025-2026), the Branch will continue to train two college majors: Preschool Education and Nursing; three intermediate-level majors: Nursing, General Practitioner and Pharmacy. In addition, the school will gradually develop training in university-level majors such as: Primary Education , Preschool Education, Tourism and Travel Services Management (or Tourism), Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Culture.
From 2026 to 2030, the Branch will expand its scale and training fields, aiming to build a multi-disciplinary, multi-field university education institution, suitable for regional characteristics and local development strategies. The fields expected to be included in training during this period include: Mong language education, History - Geography education, Chinese language, Nursing, Forestry (combined Agriculture - Forestry major), Animal Husbandry - Veterinary medicine, Medicine, Economics (or Digital Economy), Natural Science Education, Agricultural Technology, etc.
It is expected that the annual enrollment of the Branch will range from 450 to 700 students at intermediate, college and university levels.

Bridging the gap opens up learning opportunities
Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Van Hung - Director of Thai Nguyen University said that the establishment of a branch in Dien Bien province is a strategic step, clearly demonstrating the social responsibility of a key regional university.
"Currently, Thai Nguyen University is actively building a budget estimate, preparing human resources, selecting qualified lecturers, and at the same time building a training plan to improve the capacity of the team. We also have a policy to attract talented young lecturers who are enthusiastic and want to contribute long-term to the Branch", Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Van Hung shared.
In addition to the efforts of Thai Nguyen University, the People's Committee of Dien Bien province also committed to closely coordinate and proactively prepare infrastructure, support land and transfer staff and lecturers with doctoral degrees from facilities in the province to ensure professional requirements.
Provincial leaders identified this as a key educational project, contributing to raising people's knowledge, improving the quality of human resources and gradually creating a breakthrough in the local socio-economic development.
The establishment of Thai Nguyen University Branch in Dien Bien province not only has strategic significance for developing education in disadvantaged areas, but also has a positive impact on international cooperation in education.
With its geographical location bordering Laos and near Yunnan (China), the Branch has the potential to become a bridge between Vietnam and the northern provinces of Laos, as well as localities in the southwestern region of China.
In particular, by introducing specialized majors such as Chinese Language, Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Culture, the Branch aims to train international students, especially students from Laos, contributing to promoting people-to-people diplomacy and enhancing the position of Vietnamese higher education in the region.
The establishment of Thai Nguyen University branch in the area will help shorten the distance, expand learning opportunities right in the homeland, reduce costs, and at the same time motivate students to continue pursuing their dreams. This is also the basis to increase the rate of trained workers, aiming to build a local workforce with solid expertise, meeting the needs of integration and development.
