The Vietnam Geology and Minerals Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) has just completed the report on the General Survey of Minerals and Geological Mapping at a scale of 1/50,000 in the Northwest region (Northwest Project). Of the 40 gold mines found, Bac Kan and Tuyen Quang each have 8 mines; Lai Chau 5; Thanh Hoa and Nghe An each have 4; Lang Son and Cao Bang each have 3; Ha Giang and Yen Bai each have 2, and Dien Bien has one mine. In addition to gold, the accompanying minerals include silver, copper, and antimony.
Previously, Vietnam discovered 500 ore and gold mines, of which about 30 locations have been explored and evaluated with reserves of about 300 tons. The gold mines are mainly in the northern mountainous region and some central provinces.
The Vietnam Geology and Minerals Department said that map data, survey results, analysis samples, mine information and ore points have been digitized and integrated into a centralized database system. This system allows for quick search, flexible sharing and online connection, aiming to build a national digital geology foundation.
"This is an important premise for comprehensive digital transformation of the geology sector, serving state management, resource planning and attracting investment in sustainable mineral exploitation," said a representative of the project implementing unit.
The Northwest Project was approved by the Government and implemented since 2017 in 12 provinces including: Ha Giang , Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Hoa Binh, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang and 21 western districts of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces. The total survey area is 109,250 km2.
