Discover the power of a vitamin found in eggs to reduce high blood pressure

In a study recently published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society, scientists investigated whether vitamin D supplements - a vitamin found in abundance in egg yolks - along with calcium have an impact on blood pressure in older adults.


Vitamin D deficiency is a common health problem that leads to many chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. Previous studies have shown that lower vitamin D levels lead to higher blood pressure, suggesting that low vitamin D levels in the body may increase the risk of high blood pressure.

In the new study, scientists aimed to evaluate the impact of vitamin D on blood pressure in older adults, particularly those who were overweight, had high blood pressure, and were vitamin D deficient, according to the journal News Medical.

Vitamin D can be supplemented through foods such as salmon, mackerel and sardines; egg yolks and liver.

The study, conducted by scientists at St Joseph University Hospital (USA) in collaboration with Rafic Hariri Government University Hospital and American University Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon, included 221 participants aged 65 and older. Most were overweight or obese, with more than 80% having high blood pressure.

Participants were given 1,000 mg of calcium citrate tablets daily, along with vitamin D supplements at two doses:

The low-dose group took an additional 500 international units (IU) of vitamin D3 per day.

The high-dose group took an additional 3,750 IU of vitamin D3 per day.

Participants had their blood pressure measured at the start of the study, 6 months and 12 months later. They also had their blood vitamin D levels measured periodically.

The results found that vitamin D3 supplementation, combined with calcium, was effective in reducing blood pressure in older adults, especially those who were overweight. They had significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, according to News Medical.

However, the high-dose group had better results, with an average reduction in systolic blood pressure of 4.2 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure of about 3.02 mmHg.

The authors concluded that vitamin D supplementation - along with calcium - may help reduce blood pressure in older adults with high blood pressure, especially those who are overweight.

These findings highlight the potential therapeutic role of combined vitamin D and calcium supplementation in the management of high blood pressure in obese older adults.

Vitamin D supplementation combined with calcium is effective in reducing blood pressure in the elderly, especially those who are overweight.

How can you apply?

Experts advise overweight people to have a blood test to determine if they are actually deficient in vitamin D. If they are, they should consult a doctor about dosage before taking supplements. Vitamin D can build up in the body and cause harm.

It is best to expose yourself to sunlight in the morning for 20 - 30 minutes so that the body can create vitamin D naturally or through foods such as salmon, mackerel and sardines; egg yolks and liver.

And this supplement should be combined with a healthy diet, exercise and weight control.
