War films need 'fair dialogue with audiences'

That is the frank opinion of director, Meritorious Artist Dang Thai Huyen, Deputy Director of the People's Army Film Company, at the seminar Imprints of Vietnam's war films since the country's reunification held yesterday (July 2) within the framework of the Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF 3).

"When using the phrase 'dialogue', I want to emphasize the need for a change in the current approach to war films. If in the past, when we released a war film, it was often only in a propaganda direction, today, when films are widely released, we are forced to put ourselves in a very fair dialogue with the audience. Our wish is that the audience sees war films as commercial products that can be circulated, sell tickets and are willing to accept feedback from the public," said Ms. Huyen. The director of Red Rain (to be released on September 2) believes that the audience can like, dislike, and can criticize, and filmmakers must accept that. These fair dialogues will create opportunities for filmmakers to continue making better war films in the future.

Sharing about the arduous experiences of participating in war films, especially the life-threatening scenes of fire and explosion, Meritorious Artist Hoang Hai expressed his regret that many war films, although made with great passion, are often only shown for a short time and then "stored away", not reaching a large audience. According to the actor, the recent success of some films, such as Tunnels: Sun in the Dark and Peach, Pho and Piano with high ticket sales and enthusiastic reception is a good sign, helping artists feel shared. He hopes that Vietnamese war films will be properly invested in and spread more widely to the public.

Speaking more about the true value of a war film, director Meritorious Artist Bui Tuan Dung said that the most important thing is to touch the audience's emotions. The film needs to realistically recreate the setting and characters, reflecting both glory and tragedy, thereby evoking reflection on war and human fate. Concluding the workshop, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, President of the Vietnam Association for the Promotion of Cinema Development and Director of DANAFF, assessed that the honoring of war films had clear reasons, convincing arguments and was proven by vivid evidence. She believed that the workshop and the series of films about the Vietnam War would inspire filmmakers to continue pursuing this valuable topic. The event also contributed to arousing sincere interest from the audience in war films, not following trends.
