English score distribution for high school graduation exam 2025: Average score equal to last year

The Ministry of Education and Training has just announced the English score distribution for the 2025 high school graduation exam, showing that this year there were 141 candidates who scored 10.

This year's exam had 351,848 candidates taking the English exam, of which nearly 134,500 candidates scored below average (38.22%). The average score for this subject was 5.38 (in 2024 it was 5.51).

There were 53,251 candidates who scored 7 points or higher, (15.135%). The most popular score was 5.25 points.

Although experts at the conference announcing the score distribution on the afternoon of July 15 said that the English score distribution was "beautiful", the press had many concerns.

According to Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh, principal of Viet Duc High School ( Hanoi ), allowing candidates to choose 2 subjects is convenient because they will choose the subject they study best or like the most. Thus, in terms of quality, the English proficiency of more than 300,000 candidates is much better than the 1 million candidates who are required to take the English exam in 2024.

The average score for English should have improved significantly. But in reality, the average score for this subject in 2024 and 2025 is not much different. "This can only be because the English test is too difficult," some journalists commented.

Along with math, the English exam for the 2025 high school graduation exam became the center of attention because it was "both long and difficult". On social networking sites, candidates "complained" that the exam was beyond the students' ability: "The exam was long, had a lot of vocabulary, and was difficult to identify and classify the answers".

Even an IELTS test preparation teacher in Hanoi rated the English test as having the same level of difficulty as the IELTS or TOEFL test, "candidates who score 8 or higher are extremely excellent".

Some English pedagogy students said that with this year's English graduation exam, students below B2 level will have difficulty completing the exam in time, and B2 - C1 students will also be out of breath...

This year, the high school graduation recognition score includes the scores of the subjects the candidate took the exam (accounting for 50%); the average score (GPA) of the years of high school (accounting for 50%), and priority points and incentive points, if any.
