The time when Mong people celebrate Tet is also the time when all the farming work is finished, when the corn and rice have been harvested and brought home, and one of the especially important rituals of Mong people during Tet is the traditional ritual of cleaning the house, driving away evil spirits and bad luck.

On the 30th of Tet, the men of the Mong family in Hong Nhi Pa village, Lao Chai commune have to wake up very early to go to the forest to find bamboo to sweep the house.

They do it and say magic spells with the wish to drive away bad things of the old year and welcome good things in the new year.

For the Mong people, Tet clothes are basically no different from everyday clothes, but on important occasions, people will choose new, meticulously tailored dresses and shirts.

Wearing new clothes on Tet holiday also means welcoming new things and luck, so Mong women like Ms. Mua Thi Phua in Lao Chai commune these days are rushing to complete a traditional costume to wear on Tet holiday.

For women in the highlands, being able to sew new clothes for themselves and their families by hand makes them feel very happy, having new clothes to welcome a joyful and happy new year.

Every Tet holiday, Mong people often go to the district town to participate in special cultural activities.

While women sew and embroider, men are responsible for performing the paper cutting ritual.

The paper is cut into a zigzag shape and pasted inside the house to ward off bad luck. The paper is also pasted on work tools to show the Mong people's gratitude to the tools that have helped them.

Preserving unique cultural features

The Mong people have a rich spiritual and cultural life, expressed through customs, beliefs about heaven and earth, people and all things.

On every occasion of Tet, Mong people often go to the district town to participate in unique cultural activities, folk games such as: Banh Day pounding competition, Mong flute competition, throwing con, throwing pao, or simply wearing the most beautiful clothes, blending into the atmosphere of Spring in the highlands.

With over 90% of Mong people living in the area, in recent years, to create community solidarity, Mu Cang Chai district has paid special attention to the restoration of traditional festivals, in order to preserve the unique cultural features of the Mong people.

At the same time, organize cultural and artistic activities, reenact traditional games to contribute to creating a healthy playground, thereby having the opportunity to promote and introduce the traditional beauty and customs of the Mong people.

Ms. Luong Thi Xuyen, Vice Chairman of Mu Cang Chai District People's Committee said: " We have developed a plan to prepare for spring festivals. We have assigned localities to organize in hamlets, communes, and towns to prepare entertainment activities, arts, gau tao festivals, and beautiful costume contests... to create playgrounds for Mong children and preserve cultural identity."

During Lunar New Year, Mong people go down to the mountains to celebrate spring.

Tet is an occasion for people to have fun after a year of hard work. Games, songs, and the sound of the panpipes bring people closer together, increasing solidarity among people in the whole village.

This is also the time for people to gather with their families, express their gratitude to their ancestors, and wish for a lucky and happy new year.

Therefore, every preparation activity contributes to making the New Year of each Mong family here more cozy and sacred, and is also a condition for the Mong people to preserve the customs, rituals, and unique cultural features of their people.
