Better late than never

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên21/06/2023

The current Australian Constitution came into force in 1901 and makes no mention of Indigenous communities. It was not until 1967 that the basic human rights of Indigenous people were recognised in law. There are currently about 1 million Indigenous people in Australia out of a population of about 26 million.

Although the outcome of the referendum is uncertain because the Indigenous community can only gain a new voice of power when supported by the majority of voters and at least 4 out of 6 states, this is a historic event. The essence of the issue here is the effort to overcome discrimination against Indigenous people, to properly evaluate and respect the historical role and influence of Indigenous people in the formation and development of this country to date. At the same time, there is also the matter of overcoming the persistent mistakes, shortcomings and inadequacies in the country's legal system and the ruling policies of political parties that not only cause disadvantages but also harm to Indigenous communities in Australia.

At present, this discrimination is still severe in Australia and causes internal division in society. Without overcoming this situation, Australia cannot have sustainable unity within society to develop prosperously and in harmony with the modern world . To have to wait until now to overcome the dark legacy of the historical past is indeed late, even very late or too late, but it is still better than never.
