British and French leaders have made new statements and moves, after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had a failed meeting with his US counterpart Donald Trump.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer warmly welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in London on March 1, a day after the "disaster" of talks between the Ukrainian leader and US President Donald Trump.

Ahead of a summit on March 2 in London to discuss how to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia, Mr Starmer reaffirmed his support for Kyiv.

"By working with our allies, we must strengthen our preparedness for the security element of Europe, while continuing discussions with the United States," AFP quoted him as saying in a statement.

“Now is the time for us to unite to ensure the best outcome for Ukraine, protect European security and secure our common future,” he added.

The two leaders hugged before the talks.

Hours earlier, Britain announced a £2.26 billion loan deal to support Ukraine's defense capabilities, to be repaid with profits from seized Russian sovereign assets.

"This money will be redirected to arms production in Ukraine," Mr Zelensky wrote on social network X, saying Russia "must pay the price."

Supporters cheered as Mr Zelensky's motorcade drove into Downing Street - the British Prime Minister's residence - where he was hugged by Prime Minister Starmer and the two stood for photos before going inside.

"You are very, very welcome in Downing Street," Mr Starmer told Mr Zelensky.

"I want to thank the people of the United Kingdom for their tremendous support from the very beginning of this war," the Ukrainian president responded.

The two leaders held closed-door talks for about 75 minutes.

On the French side, President Emmanuel Macron's office said he had a phone call with President Zelensky after the US-Ukraine summit at the White House.

In interviews with French media, Mr. Macron called for "calm" from the two leaders of the United States and Ukraine, and called for dialogue on the possibility of building a European nuclear "shield" because the continent may no longer rely on the United States.

President Macron said any US "disengagement" in Ukraine was "not in their interest", as forcing Kyiv to sign a ceasefire without security guarantees would see "their capacity to deter Russia, China and others evaporate in a day".
