In his latest blog, Sam Altman argues that AI will revolutionize everyday life in unprecedented ways. AI will soon evolve into personal assistants, change the healthcare industry…
According to him, this phenomenon, although not new, will be accelerated. Thanks to that, human capacity will be significantly expanded and can complete things that our ancestors thought were impossible.
“We are more capable not because of genetic change, but because we benefit from a social infrastructure that is smarter and more capable than ever before; society itself is a form of advanced intelligence.”
According to the CEO of OpenAI, “superintelligent AI” will appear in “a few thousand days”, although he admits it may take longer. “But I am confident we will get there”.
Altman credits deep learning as the driving force behind rapid advances in AI. “Deep learning is more efficient, more predictive at scale, and we’re dedicating more resources to it.”
He describes how deep learning algorithms allow machines to learn from huge datasets, producing increasingly accurate outputs. “With shocking levels of accuracy, the more data and computation it has, the better it gets at assisting humans in solving difficult problems.”
Despite his optimism, Altman acknowledges a significant challenge: cost. He warns that without significant expansion of computing infrastructure, AI could become a scarce resource, accessible only to the wealthy.
“If we want to put AI in the hands of as many people as possible, we need to reduce the cost of computing and make it redundant (requiring lots of power and chips). Without building enough infrastructure, AI will be a very limited resource that will have to be fought for and will almost always be a tool for the rich,” he wrote.
The ChatGPT boss also admitted that the AI era will have its downsides, but the positive will outweigh the negative. He believes that the future of AI is bright and a characteristic of the Intelligence Era is common prosperity.
