After the rain

(GLO)- For many people, rain itself evokes sadness, like an insecurity, an unexpected feeling. However, like plants, each person's life does not grow from the rain, but is filled with experiences.

The cold wetness makes us cherish the sunny days, grateful to our parents for protecting us from the misty rain and strong winds. Only when we feel the dreary wetness can we appreciate and be happy about the warm sunny days. As the writer Nguyen Tuan compared: "happy like seeing the crisp sunshine after a period of heavy rain, happy like reconnecting a broken dream".

It was a touching feeling that arose in the cool breeze, in the clouds and sunshine weaving the clear sky. After the rain, the earth and sky, all things were warmed and the dark clouds of sadness and gloom in the soul seemed to have gradually disappeared.

In the highlands where the rain and clouds hang heavy for months, the signs of stopping the rain will never be easy. It tests patience with the darkness of the days, with cold, wet and sad as the only “combo” of feelings.

That is probably the reason why in “The Life of a Grave Statue” (an essay by Chu Van Son), the impressions of the jungle rain were portrayed so specially by a soul sensitive to beauty and sadness: “The afternoon rain made the statue’s face heavy and swollen. Water from the two deep eye sockets kept flowing down the worn cheeks, down the hands that were covering the face, and then kept dripping like stalactites in a dark cave, down to the skinny knees whose wooden flesh had long since rotted away.”

It is the feeling of touching the rain, to absorb the sadness of the Central Highlands rainy season. Therefore, in the midst of the rain, the moment of blue sky, white clouds, and golden sunshine after the rain is truly precious.

I still remember the summers of my childhood, after the long, heavy rains, the sky and earth returned to a sunny, clear space. Lying on my side on the sidewalk watching the clouds drifting gently in the sky as if someone were pulling out the white tulle curtain to dry, I felt all the narrowness and sadness in my heart being washed away. Suddenly, I thought to myself that the poet Xuan Dieu was very subtle and reasonable when he argued: “Spring in the middle of winter when the sun appears/in the middle of summer when the sky is blue after the rain/in the middle of autumn when the bright wind blows just right”.

We cannot deny a psychological law, when sad, the rain makes us even sadder. However, the truth is that the source of human sadness is often not the rain. Therefore, in the rain, in the loneliest, saddest moment, we can only face ourselves. After the storm, does the human soul also mature like that? Remember when we were in high school, we female students always wished for heavy rain and strong winds so that we could be exempted from wearing the ao dai uniform, without having to be entangled. Who knew that those small, heartless wishes, for the people of the Central region living with storms and floods, were a burden on food, clothing and even life.

In me then and now, sometimes remembering, I feel myself and the rain seeping into each other. I remember one time, in the middle of a pouring rain, sitting on a depressing bus, I was startled to see rain splashing against the rolled-down window and the driver shouting out into the street like a broken command: “Watch out, the girl might fall asleep!”

Outside, the rain was pouring down, the baby sitting behind his father was dozing off, his neck bent back… At that moment, I suddenly felt a burst of light, not because of the shout, not because of the pouring rain, it was beyond the sadness that was surrounding my soul. The suffering and humanity, in the rain, became real and close, making the trivial joys and sorrows seem distant. An awakening between warmth and coldness, dryness and wetness, happiness and uncertainty, poverty and abundance, forced me to think more deeply about the inherent symmetry and imperfection of life.

I used to think about the rain, waiting, wishing for the rainy season to pass quickly. Sometimes I felt anxious and worried, sometimes I felt restless and anxious. The passing rains in life, the "showers following the drizzles" are not always pleasant... But life, like all things, will be reborn after the rain, so gentle and intense. And I deeply realized that, like life, rain also needs to be reborn.
