On September 30, OpenAI officially released Sora, a new social application built on an improved version of the video generation model. Although it was newly launched and only available to invited users, Sora quickly attracted attention with 56,000 downloads in the US on the first day and increased to 108,000 on the second day.
This achievement puts Sora straight into the top 3 apps on the App Store, making OpenAI one of the rare companies to have two apps in the top group at the same time, alongside ChatGPT. However, both are still behind Google’s Gemini – the app that holds the number 1 spot thanks to the sustained appeal of its Nano Banana image model.
The appearance of Sora shows that the AI race on mobile platforms is getting hotter. Previously, the number of downloads of Sora on the first day was comparable to Grok of xAI, but still lower than ChatGPT and Gemini, which each reached more than 80,000 installs right after their launch.
Notably, both Sora and Gemini emphasize multimodal capabilities – incorporating images and videos – rather than focusing solely on text like ChatGPT. This trend suggests that mobile users tend to prefer visual interactions, rather than just text-based chat.
While Elon Musk is still pursuing lawsuits with Apple and OpenAI over Grok, Google and OpenAI are steadily making their mark on the App Store. Gemini continues to hold the advantage thanks to its ability to create images that closely resemble reference material, while Sora promises to explode with its combination of social features and hyper-realistic video creation.
However, Sora's success also comes with challenges. Experts predict that the app may face controversies related to image copyright infringement, trademark infringement and the risk of misuse of AI technology in the future.
Sora's strong rise once again confirms that, despite concerns about “AI fatigue,” user demand for innovative and intuitive AI products is still growing strongly, opening a new era for AI-based mobile applications.
