Suarez caused controversy again for diving

Brazil striker Luis Suarez rolled around on the field and demanded the referee show him a card in Gremio's loss to Internacional in the Brazilian National Championship last weekend.

The incident happened in the 21st minute, when Suarez escaped past the center circle. The Gremio striker blocked the ball, collided with player number 6 Rene and fell to the ground. He rolled two more times, held his leg and then turned back to ask the referee to penalize the Internacional defender.

After the referee gave Rene a yellow card, Suarez sat there laughing, while his opponent looked angry.

Suarez caused controversy again for diving

Suarez scored a superb free-kick in the second half, curling the ball through the wall into the near post. Despite this, Gremio still lost 2-3 to Internacional. They are currently third with 44 points, two points behind Bragantino and 11 points behind Botafogo.

Suarez joined Gremio in January 2023 on a two-year contract, after a brief spell of unemployment following his departure from boyhood club Nacional. In his debut match, the Uruguayan striker scored a hat-trick as Gremio beat Sao Luiz 4-1 to win the Recopa Gaucha Super Cup.

In April, Suarez won his second title with Gremio, the Campeonato Gaucho - the Rio Grande do Sul state championship. He scored from a penalty in the second leg of the final, helping Gremio beat Caxias 2-1 on aggregate. In total, Suarez has scored 19 goals in 41 games for the Brazilian club.

Suarez will play for Gremio from early 2023.

Suarez is known for his dirty play and has caused controversy since his peak playing days in Europe . In November 2010, he bit PSV's Otman Bakkal on the shoulder in his final game for Ajax, and was banned for seven matches by the Dutch Football Federation.

While playing for Liverpool, Suarez reportedly used the word "nigger" seven times in the space of two minutes aimed at Man Utd's Patrice Evra in the Premier League in October 2021. As a result, he was fined £40,000 (nearly $50,000) and suspended for eight matches. At the end of the 2012-2013 season, the Uruguayan striker continued to shock by biting Branislav Ivanovic's hand in a Chelsea-Liverpool match. This time, the penalty was a 10-match suspension.

While playing for Uruguay, Suarez also bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder in the 2014 World Cup group stage. The climax was the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup. With the score at 1-1 in extra time, the Uruguayan striker used his hand to block a Ghana goal, earning a red card but saving Uruguay from defeat. Gyan Asamoah then missed a penalty, sending the match to a penalty shootout - where Uruguay won to advance.

Controversy aside, Suarez is a prolific goalscorer. At Ajax, he scored 111 goals in 159 games, won the Dutch National Championship and the Dutch Cup. At Liverpool, he contributed 79 goals in 110 games. At Barca, the striker born in 1987 scored 147 goals in 191 games, won four La Ligas, four Spanish King's Cups, two Spanish Super Cups, one Champions League, one European Super Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup.

Joining Atletico after being abandoned by Barca in 2020, Suarez flourished with 21 goals and three assists to help Atletico win La Liga in the 2020-2021 season. He returned to Nacional in 2022-2023, scoring eight goals in 16 games, before joining Gremio. In June 2023, Gremio President Alberto Guerra revealed that Suarez had to take daily painkiller injections and was considering retiring at the age of 36 due to persistent knee injuries.
