Vietnam Chemical Group Part 1: A solid pillar contributing to ensuring national food security

To ensure stable food production, fertilizers play an extremely important role in improving crop productivity. Over the past decades, the Vietnam Chemical Group (Vinachem) has become a solid pillar in supplying fertilizers, contributing to maintaining the stability of the agricultural sector, farmers' lives and rural development; contributing to ensuring sustainable national food security.

Currently, Vinachem has member units that are leading fertilizer suppliers in Vietnam and in the Southeast Asia region. The Group meets over 40% of the total domestic demand for fertilizers and over 1 million tons of exported fertilizers - an impressive figure demonstrating its pivotal position and market stability. Thanks to proactive production and storage, Vinachem always ensures good supply and reasonable prices of fertilizers even in difficult periods when the supply chain is broken, such as the Covid-19 pandemic or geopolitical conflicts, food security crises.

Maintaining a stable fertilizer supply is of particular importance. During the years of fluctuating fertilizer prices in the world, Vinachem has played the role of “midwife” for agriculture by limiting sudden price increases and ensuring enough fertilizer for the season. Thanks to that, farmers can rest assured in production, without shortage of input materials, contributing to stabilizing the area and output of food crops. The productivity of rice and other key crops in Vietnam in recent years has always been maintained at a high level, helping Vietnam ensure domestic food security and maintain its position as the world’s leading rice exporter. This is a clear demonstration of the importance of the chemical industry in general – and the fertilizer sector in particular – to people’s lives and the country’s economy .

In addition to meeting domestic demand, Vinachem has also expanded its reach to the international market. The Group has expanded its fertilizer exports to more than 70 countries and territories, with an average annual export turnover of about 700 million USD. This shows that Vietnamese fertilizer products are not only self-sufficient domestically but also competitive in the world market. The amount of fertilizer exported each year also indirectly supports domestic farmers: when there is a surplus of production, exports help to release inventories and reduce the cost of fertilizer products, thereby helping to reduce and stabilize domestic prices. At the same time, the enhanced reputation of Vietnamese fertilizers in the international market also affirms the brand and quality of the domestic fertilizer and chemical industry.

Contribute significantly to maintaining food security

By ensuring an abundant, timely supply of fertilizers at reasonable prices, Vinachem has made an important contribution to maintaining national food security. Fertilizers account for a large proportion of agricultural production costs; therefore, stable supply and prices help farmers make profits and continue to invest in expanding production. When farmers have access to quality fertilizers at reasonable prices, they have the conditions to intensify cultivation, increase crops, and apply effective farming techniques, thereby increasing productivity and crop yields. The stable development of agricultural production creates a solid foundation for rural economic development, improving farmers' lives, and narrowing the development gap between urban and rural areas.

Not only in the economic aspect, Vinachem's role in agriculture - farmers - rural areas is also reflected in its social responsibility. Over the years, the Group has had many programs to support farmers, such as consulting on effective fertilizer use, organizing seminars to guide farming techniques, helping people apply the "4 right" fertilizer application method (right type, right dose, right time, right method). These activities help farmers save costs, increase production efficiency and protect the environment. Vinachem also actively coordinates with the government and organizations to support fertilizers when natural disasters and epidemics occur, ensuring that farmers in difficult areas still have enough production materials.
