ASEAN is on track to become the world’s fourth-largest economy with a GDP of around $4 trillion. Despite its growth potential, the region faces a major food security challenge, with nearly half of its population unable to afford a healthy diet.

Food security from reducing waste to expanding access to nutrition

Speaking at the ASEAN-EU Business Summit 2025, Mr. Michael Wu, General Director of Tetra Pak Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines, opened with a reality: “One in 10 food truck trips never reaches the family table. This figure not only reflects waste, but also raises the alarm about food insecurity - an urgent challenge in the region.”

He said that if ASEAN only focuses on production and ignores processing, preservation and distribution, it will not be able to solve the problem of food security at its root.

This is also the field where Tetra Pak has strength with advanced processing technology, especially UHT sterilization solution that helps food retain nutritional value and safety for 6-12 months.

During the discussion session "Feeding Tomorrow: Safe, Accessible and Sustainable Nutrition for ASEAN", Ms. Ratanasiri Tilokskulchai, General Director of Tetra Pak Thailand, emphasized the role of public-private partnership in addressing food security.

The company has made a difference through the implementation of a widespread school milk program, helping 66 million children in more than 42 countries and territories around the world access safer nutrition every day.

In Malaysia, Tetra Pak works with local producers to bring school milk to more than 800,000 students each year; in Indonesia, the company supports the Ministry of Education and Culture in implementing the “Milk for Future Generations” program. In Vietnam, since 2006, Tetra Pak has worked with partners and stakeholders to implement the School Milk program, helping tens of millions of children access safe nutrition.

Committed to accompanying the transformation of sustainable food systems

Tetra Pak's specific commitments and actions at the conference are also linked to the development orientation of many countries in the region, including Vietnam.

The National Action Plan for Sustainable Food Systems by 2030, launched by the Government of Vietnam after the United Nations Conference on Food Systems, has clearly defined the goals: reducing food loss and waste, improving nutrition for children and vulnerable groups, and promoting development linked to climate goals and a circular economy.

Participating in the AEM - EU consultation session, Ms. Nguyen Thanh Giang, General Director of Tetra Pak Vietnam, affirmed: “We are at the most favorable time in trade relations between ASEAN and the EU, when free trade agreements are showing clear effectiveness.

From the reality in Vietnam, we have witnessed the practical benefits that the Vietnam - EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) brings, with strong growth in trade turnover and significant increase in investment from Europe. This further strengthens the belief that deeper cooperation, towards a trade agreement between regions, will bring great common benefits.

“From a business perspective, we welcome the commitment of ASEAN countries to the goal of ensuring food security and reducing food loss and waste,” she stressed.

This is the area where Tetra Pak and its partners in the food value chain are actively contributing, to bring safe and sustainable nutrition to more people, everywhere in the region."

Through extensive cooperation with governments, international organizations and local businesses, Tetra Pak continues to affirm its position as a trusted partner, accompanying ASEAN on the journey to build a future where everyone can access safe, nutritious and sustainable food sources through technology and sustainable innovation initiatives.
