OceanGate Expeditions said in a brief statement on June 19 that it was "mobilizing all options" to rescue those on board.

A spokesman for the Coast Guard in Boston (USA) confirmed to The Guardian that "a small submarine with five people on board has gone missing near the wreck of the Titanic".

The U.S. Coast Guard did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Earlier, media reported that the U.S. Coast Guard had launched search and rescue operations.

“We are extremely grateful for the extensive support we have received from a number of government agencies and companies in our efforts to reestablish contact with the submersible,” OceanGate said in a statement.

OceanGate is currently undertaking its fifth Titanic “mission” in 2023, scheduled to begin last week and end on June 22, according to the company’s website. To visit the Titanic wreck, passengers will enter the Titan, a five-person submersible.

According to the OceanGate website, the expedition costs $250,000 per person, starting in St. John's, the capital of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada), before traveling about 643 km into the Atlantic Ocean to the site of the Titanic wreck.

The Titanic sank in about 2 hours and 40 minutes after hitting an iceberg on April 14, 1912, while en route from Southampton (England) to New York (USA), killing 1,503 people, becoming the most famous maritime disaster of the 20th century.
