Visit the special national relic Son La Prison using virtual technology

Son La Provincial Museum has just deployed an application to visit the special national relic Son La Prison using VR technology (virtual reality technology), aiming to improve the effectiveness of reproducing and promoting the historical value of the relic in a sustainable direction.

The special national relic of Son La Prison is located on the top of Khau Ca hill, in group 9, To Hieu ward, Son La city. From 1930 to 1945, the French colonialists detained 14 groups of political prisoners, with a total of 1,013 prisoners here. After 3 times of construction, consolidation and expansion, Son La prison has a total area of ​​2,184 m2. Son La prison has become a place to train and foster excellent communist soldiers, such as comrades To Hieu, Le Duan, Truong Chinh, Nguyen Luong Bang... Today, the relic of Son La Prison has become a red address to educate the people about the revolutionary tradition of patriotism, national pride and self-respect.

Previously, the preservation, storage and promotion of historical values ​​at relics only used traditional technologies and means. The propaganda of historical values ​​was only used on-site and on electronic information pages with simple technology, and artifacts were displayed in 2D format.

The provincial-level scientific project on applying VR technology (virtual reality technology) to build a model to visit the special national relic Son La Prison was deployed from May 2022 to December 2023, chaired by the University of Information and Communication Technology - Thai Nguyen University.

The goal is to build a virtual reality tour model of the Son La Prison National Special Relic Site using VR technology running on a 3D web environment, in order to improve the effectiveness of reproduction and promote the historical value of the relic. Serving access searches running on a 3D web environment, actively contributing to local history education and promoting tourism development.

The project team collected images and field data of the entire landscape of Son La Prison, exhibition spaces, artifacts, documents, historical evidence... to recreate and restore construction items, prison cells, prisoners' living scenes and build 3D models of the evidence, artifacts, documents, historical figures, prisoners, and prison guards at Son La Prison. Create skeletons and recreate movements for historical figures to create effects and feelings for users.

On that basis, build a virtual reality simulation system of the special National Monument of Son La Prison based on the application of VR technology running on a 3D web environment integrated on the Provincial Museum's electronic information page. At the same time, organize 2 scientific seminars, 1 training course for 15 officers of the Provincial Museum on how to use and exploit the functions of the virtual Monument tour application.

The tour model with 3D images in vivid colors and motion, combined with automatic narration, has helped readers visualize the entire project, the activities, detention, and torture of political prisoners that once took place here.
