Establishing an investigation team to verify fishing vessels violating the law and losing connection at sea in Kien Giang

The Steering Committee on IUU in Kien Giang province said that Kien Giang has 3,626 fishing boats with a length of 15m or more; about 3,605 fishing boats are equipped with voyage monitoring devices.

From January 1, 2023 to July 16, 2024, the locality recorded 169 fishing boats losing connection signals multiple times at sea in Kien Giang.

The investigation team to verify the cause of the loss of connection signal to the fishing vessel monitoring device in Kien Giang (referred to as Investigation and Verification Team 269) will review groups of fishing vessels that frequently lose connection signal to the fishing vessel monitoring device at sea and promptly detect signs of law violations by individuals and organizations.

The team will then propose to the Provincial IUU Steering Committee solutions to prevent the loss of signal connection to the journey monitoring device for fishing vessels, contributing to removing the EC yellow card.

Mr. Thai Thanh Lap - Director of Kien Giang Fishing Vessel Inspection Center - informed that ship owners often violate fishing zone boundaries and lose connection signals at sea.

There are fishing boats that repeatedly lose connection over long periods of time. In addition, fishing boat owners install tracking devices and then remove them to deal with the situation.

"Localities need to focus on managing the installation and removal of fishing vessel monitoring equipment; upgrading and adding software to the monitoring and automatic warning system to promptly detect fishing vessel violations.

"Authorities should strengthen inspection and thoroughly handle fishing vessels that repeatedly violate the requirement to remove cruise monitoring equipment," said Mr. Lap.

"The 269 Investigation and Verification Team will establish a working group to inspect fishing vessels that violate regulations at sea. In cases where the vessel owner intentionally violates regulations on fishing at sea, the local authorities will investigate, consolidate the records, and handle them in accordance with the law," Colonel Dang emphasized.
