The southern fishing season is the time for catching seafood from April to September every year. This is the main season that brings in large income for fishermen nationwide in general and Lam Dong in particular. Taking advantage of favorable weather, these days, fishermen in the province are rushing to go to sea.

Arriving at Phan Thiet Fishing Port, one of the province's major fishing ports, early in the morning, we felt the bustling working atmosphere here as boats continuously docked, bringing with them full holds of fish. In particular, this is the main season for southern fish, with a good catch of mackerel, so Phan Thiet Fishing Port receives dozens of tons of mackerel every day. As soon as the boat docked, fishermen quickly transferred the fish from the ship's hold to plastic trays, then pushed them straight to shore. On the beach, traders were waiting to classify, weigh, and purchase the fish on the spot, then put them on refrigerated trucks to be sold in many provinces and cities.

Fisherman Tran Nhu Hoa excitedly shared: “My boat just had a 3-day trip and caught more than 5 tons of fish. After deducting expenses, I earned several tens of millions of dong. This year the weather is more favorable, so since the beginning of the southern fishing season, each fishing trip has been a bumper one, sometimes catching up to 8-9 tons of fish. Thanks to effective fishing, each crew member earns several million dong per trip.”

Fishermen have a good mackerel season

According to many fishermen, since the beginning of the year, the weather has been favorable, so fishermen who have gone offshore have had a good yield. Only in the first days of September, there was a storm and strong winds, so many boats were left on shore for a few days. After that, most of the boats returned to port and caught a lot of mackerel. Mr. Huynh Tan Nong - Logistics Fleet Manager of Bich Thanh Seafood Company Limited said: "There are days when the company buys dozens of tons of fish, sorts and distributes them to companies according to orders. Most of them are spiny mackerel, which are very fat this season, and are exploited by fishermen in waters about 15 - 20 nautical miles from shore. This year's output is high, so the price of mackerel fluctuates from 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg".

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Thu - Head of the Phan Thiet Fishing Port Management Board said: “From April until now, fishermen have been going to sea quite smoothly, recently catching mackerel, the output is higher than last year. From the beginning of the year until now, the output unloaded at Phan Thiet Fishing Port is more than 15,000 tons. In parallel with fishing, this is the peak period of implementing the work against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU), so the Phan Thiet Fishing Port Management Board coordinates with the relevant agencies to propagate to fishermen to comply with the provisions of the law. Offshore fishing vessels must turn on the journey monitoring device, record the fishing log and must not fish in foreign waters; the seafood caught must be traceable to its origin”.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Lam Dong has the advantage of a 192 km long coastline, an inland water area of 20,288 km2 , connecting to the Southeast region, East Truong Sa, especially Phu Quy island located offshore. This is the province's condition to develop the marine economy , especially developing exploitation and logistics services for fisheries in offshore waters. Notably, the total number of fishing vessels arriving/leaving ports since the beginning of the year has been more than 44,000, with an output of more than 163,000 tons, an increase of 3.62% over the same period. This year, thanks to favorable weather, many fish have returned, so fishermen have more conditions to stay at sea and on fishing grounds. Mackerel has a low economic value, but with a large output, it still gives fishermen a good income. Income from mackerel not only helps families cover living expenses and invest in reproduction, but also motivates people to go offshore, keep their jobs and keep the sea.
